Spell: Chaos Bolt
So you want a prismatic sort of spell at 1st level, but you want it to deal damage. Behold: a Sorcerer-only spell right up your alley!
This one is almost standard for the prismatic spells: you do roll a d8 and what you roll determines the energy type the target gets hit with. However, the numbers aren’t color-coordinated and the energy types don’t quite line up:
Prismatic Spray and Wall (3.x and 5e): 1.) Red, Fire; 2.) Orange, Acid; 3.) Yellow, Lightning; 4.) Green, Poison; 7.) Violet, Banishment; 8.) Two rays (reroll twice, ignore 8s)
3.x: 5 = Blue, Petrification; 6 = Indigo, Insanity
5e: 5 = Blue, Cold; 6 = Indigo, Petrification; 7 also blinds the target.
Chaos Bolt: instead of the number aligning with a color in rainbow order and then an associated energy type or effect, 1 through 8 align with the damage types in alphabetical order except for strictly physical (bludgeoning, piercing, slashing) or quasi-divine (necrotic, radiant) ones. In order: Acid, Cold, Fire, Force, Lightning, Poison, Psychic, Thunder.
The spell deals 2d8 + Xd6 damage (where X is the level of the spell slot used to cast chaos bolt); the damage type is your choice of either type indicated by the d8s -- so if you roll 3 and 4, you have a choice of Fire and Force. This makes it niftier than your standard prismatic effect, as the stock randomness can be a disadvantage (something could be resistant or immune to whatever you roll).
However, the niftiest bit about this spell is that it has the possibility of chaining. If you roll doubles on the d8s, the chaos bolt jumps to another target. Though the next target has to be within 30 ft. of the previous one and the bolt cannot strike a creature more than once, the wording is such that you could do these jumps nearly infinitely. Basically, you’ve got the potential to do an AoE burst with a 120 ft. diameter while ignoring any targets you don’t want to hit; it’s a remote chance, but it’s still possible.
By 3.x standards, this spell is monstrously powerful for its level. When I watched the Animated Spellbook entry on it, I knew I needed to read up on it. Having done so, I’m astounded. This makes me suspect that the damage balance in 5e is quite different from in 3.x and that I still have a ways to go before I’ve gotten a good idea of what is and is not powerful.
