MILGRAM Trial Sprites Visual Analysis: Part 001

Haruka Sakurai

hie so i wanted to do this for a while because i really like character design and studying how the personalities of characters can translate into their designs... so i thought why not yap about that with my current obsession!!! starting with haruka ofc... i'll prob go in order from haruka to es! hope you enjoy!!

Trial 1

Starting off with his stance, he obviously appears very timid with his facial expression and pose. While this is obviously meant to represent his shy nature starting off in MILGRAM, I think it also shows him to be appearing "smaller" than he actually is. His posture is slouched, his arm crosses insecurely to the other, his knees are bent, and his heels press together to bring his legs closer to each other. This makes sense, given that he wishes to be pitied and loved like a small child. Given that he stands at 174 cm, he is by no means small, so he appears smaller by taking on a pitiful stance.

Another key feature is his outfit. While we can't see the shirt underneath his straitjacket (it's assumable that he wears the same shirt he does in Weakness, or perhaps he even wears only the straitjacket with nothing under, going along with his tendency to just wear what he has) we can see his necklace, pants, and shoes. In official art, he's almost never shown without the necklace, its string still visible even if his pendant is hidden in his shirt. Even in Trial 1, extra accessories are uncommon if they don't hold a meaning to the prisoner wearing them. This is obviously because of it formerly belonging to his mother, who he still cherishes despite her neglect.

His pants are plain and white, as are his shoes. This is a contrast from his outfits growing up, showing some contrast in what he wears.

In his Weakness outfit, where he's depicted as younger, he has a blue polo shirt, black shorts, white socks, and what appears to be brown/black velcro strap shoes. Even from childhood, he isn't shown with any kind of laced shoes. His shirt has buttons, implying effort in the outfit.

While his outfit in All-Knowing and All-Agony isn't very colorful, only appearing in neutral colors, it has multiple layers, at least signifying some kind of effort put into the outfit, much like the buttons on his polo in Weakness.

Which leads us back to his outfit within the prison.

It's unique from other prisoners' outfits, as he's the one of the only prisoners shown to wear something that matches what he wears in a music video. In Weakness, present-day Haruka has the same exact shoes and pants, and presumably shirt, as he wears within the prison. If we go off of this, his outfit is completely plain and features little to no layers, even with laceless slide-on shoes and a lack of socks.

If his shirt and pants are what he has, it implies his mother put less thought into which clothes she bought for Haruka as he got older. A particularly important detail though, are his shoes.

Both in his childhood and in present-day, he is depicted with shoes without laces. Tying shoes is an important step in children learning coordination and being able to make precise motor movements. However, he's never depicted with tied shoes and given his very young age in his child form in Weakness, it's likely he never learned how to tie them to begin with, hinting that his parents never assisted in motor and mental development to begin with. This goes against the common claim that his parents "started" being abusive when he got older, with them always having catered to his lack of knowledge and initial development rather than attempting to aid it. This is a big deal for a character like Haruka, as it's likely where one developmental issue stemmed and implies a series of other developmental issues that weren't properly accounted for before his parents forgot about him entirely.

His shirt is also seemingly slightly larger than him, circling back to his desire to appear smaller. Despite this, his pants show his ankles and slightly above, appearing normal sized on him.

His hair is a normal length and a little messy. While it can be attributed to natural fluffiness/thickness, it's also likely that he's unfamiliar with brushing his hair, especially with its appearance when he was younger. His bangs also cover one of his eyes, likely symbolizing his timid nature and his initial standoffishness.

His expression is obviously shy, droopy, and pitiful. His eyes are angled downward, giving him a resting gloomy face.

All of this ties into his initial gloomy and introverted disposition, as well as hinting at the neglect he faced growing up. He isn't confident in Trial 1, and doubts himself a lot, as shown by his insecure appearance.

Trial 2

His stance is visibly more confident than in Trial 1, with straighter posture and him positioning his left side forward slightly as if to be asserting himself to the viewer. His facial expression is obviously more optimistic than before, but still holds an air of unsureness to it with his consistent frowned eyebrows.

He no longer covers his abdomen with his arm, exposing more of himself to the viewer and essentially allowing them to see more of himself. He doesn't feel as much of a need to recluse as he did before, where he hid more of himself in his old stance.

His undershirt is still not shown, but he retains his necklace from T1. Notably, he obviously has the hairclips he was given from Muu and new pants and shoes, still without socks. His shoes aren't tied, confirming that he does not know how to do it. He also steps on the back of one shoe, implying that he tends to sloppily kick them on rather than take the time to sit down and coordinate them. This ties back to my interpretation on how his outfit tells an image about his experience growing up and struggling with learning coordination.

This can also be seen in his pant legs being rolled up unevenly. Asymmetry in general is good for conveying uncoordinated parts of a character in their design. His pants might be a little large on him, judging by the length of their bundled up cuffs, adding onto his desire to appear smaller.

Notably, his hair is neater, and while it still appears fluffy with loose strands, it looks like it's been brushed. It's messier in the back, which hints that he may put more effort into brushing the front, assuming he does it himself. Everything new about his appearance, from his demeanor to his outfit, can all be attributed to Muu's influence on him and strongly conveys his relationship with her.

Even though he appears more confident, he still has hints of insecurity in his body language and positioning. In All-Knowing And All-Agony's cover art, his grin appears somewhat forced, like he's trying to rid himself of remaining insecurity - his left eye is also still always obscured, showing that he still feels at least a little insecure, and that hasn't rid itself completely since his T1 appearance. Despite this, he's able to coordinate himself better and can bring up more confidence in himself than before.

While he still has drooping, gloomy eyes, they are more often shown slightly wider than before, indicating a more optimistic disposition. It's obvious to detect the pipeline here. Insecure kid gains confidence that he needed positive influence to gain. We only see this happier, more carefree side of himself when we see the visible influences from Muu in his accessories and clothes. Despite his new attachment to Muu, he holds onto his mother in the form of his necklace.

Trial 3

His stance is proud, his shoulders are raised and his posture is straight, while his hands are clasped together and one leg is bent slightly more than the other. It's not hard to gather what's being conveyed in this stance. He feels fulfilled with his life, proud that he was able to change and be useful in his final deed.

His outfit resembles a school uniform, notably resembling Muu's in appearance, even with a sweater vest to go under the blazer. (Despite Muu going to an all-girls school and Haruka wearing what would be the equivalent of a masculine uniform.) I doubt it's a coincidence, since uniforms vary from school to school. Even if he's not wearing the exact uniform, Muu's influence is visible, alongside the hairclips that were absent from his hair in his final video. This not only reflects his desire to be useful to people he cares about (particularly Muu, in this instance) but also to be smart and excel academically. It ties into his expressed desire to be a smart, strong, and interesting person.

The uniform is white, which symbolizes purity, hope, and of course, Heaven and the afterlife. Even though he's for sure not going to Heaven (sorry Haruka ily) it conveys his peaceful feelings left in his spirit through that symbolism.

His sash is gold and reads "Mors certa," which comes from the Latin phrase "Mors certa, hora incerta", which means "Death is certain, its hour is uncertain." This phrase is meaningful to his death, not only conveying the inevitable end of life that lingers over everyone, but with how Haruka knew he would die due to it being planned by him, the only uncertainty being when he'd finally pass away.

The gold coloration symbolizes success, achievement, wisdom, and spiritual enlightenment. Notably, all of his colors are lightened, likely to give him a heavenly appearance.

His necklace is absent from his sprite, though possibly being hidden inside his hands. Whether it's completely missing or hidden, both can symbolize letting go of his past bonds that held him down and made him feel useless, instead focusing on the bonds that positively influence him and make him useful. Despite this, he still has love for his mother, as displayed in his final video.

He also wears what resembles pajama pants, indicating an eternal sleep in his death.

Other/Common Symbols

Ending off with his most concrete features (AKA features that don't change through appearances such as hair and eye color) we can obviously see that he uses a lot of blue in his design. It's not hard to pinpoint why that is - blue is usually associated with sadness, depression, and passiveness. It can also be associated with loyalty and trust, all of which I would say are characteristics of Haruka as a person.

I also think the common association between blue and masculinity is somewhat important to his character, particularly his upbringing and the fact that his mother wished for a daughter. In Weakness, his outfit is light blue, often associated with baby boys, while his victim's dress is light pink, associated with baby girls. This could signify one source of his envy towards the girl, with her being what his mother wanted him to be.

In Trial 3, his blue coloration might also be interpreted as representing peace, tranquility, intelligence (what Haruka desired the most), and a connection to the divine.

Blue is also the color that shows in body parts afflicted by cyanosis. In a more specific case, your face turns blue when you suffocate due to a lack of blood flow to the head. This reflects in his murder method being strangulation.

Adding onto the point of envy being a primary theme of his character, his eyes have noticeable green highlights in them in some shots. Though it's likely to serve as a complimenting color, it can also likely allude to the idiom "eyes green with envy."

In the case of common symbols, he has a few. The color blue itself (which was already covered), fireworks, water, and butterflies, to name a few.

Fireworks represent strength, which contrasts Haruka's theming of weakness and pity, but also fleeting beauty and impermanence, made apparent by their quick dispersal in the sky. This could not only represent Haruka's victim, but Haruka himself.

Water can represent life, purity, transformation, and power. Transformation is a big part of Haruka's arc, especially as he makes a large shift from T1 to T2. It can also hint at how Haruka views the world through weakness and strength, as well as a lack of air, evident by the flooding imagery in All-Knowing And All Agony.

The water can also represent Haruka's feeling of drowning in despair without his mother's attention. At the end of All-Knowing And All-Agony, it becomes formaldehyde instead, which is used to preserve dead matter. This likely represents his feeling of self-preservation after finally receiving attention from his mother, even if it was negative attention. (Note, orange is also blue's opposite color.)

Water can also represent his feelings of unfamiliarity with new situations since he was never brought up to handle them, as if he was thrown into water and had to teach himself how to swim.

Butterflies represent transformation, rebirth, the soul itself, and, in some cultures, white butterflies are said to represent the spirits of deceased loved ones. They also represent the fleeting beauty of life, similarly to fireworks.

In conclusion, I think his design conveys his character well. It carries symbolism and background details in small symbols, and displays his personality effectively through things like body language, color symbolism, and facial expression. I think Haruka is a good example of a character who can tell you a story just by looking into his design.

Some parts of this analysis may be obvious, some may not. The point isn't what everyone already knows, it's attempting to dig deeper and pick apart the design to tell different aspects of himself.

Overall, I think I did pretty good analyzing him... probably gonna do Yuno soon!

Upon first hearing of it from Mahiru, unsurprisingly, Haruka had no idea what pocky was. He tilted his head towards the girl, mumbling out a ‘hm?’ as she rambled on about how romantic it was. It was no surprise that even in prison Mahiru would care about such things, since on valentines she had somehow roped everyone into baking cookies, but it seemed to fly directly over Haruka’s head as he listened.

“...? I- I’m confused.. So you just.. Eat the candy…..?” He asked, gently tapping his chin. “How is that a game..?” You could hear a slight snicker come from a certain red-haired boy in the other corner of the room, followed swiftly by an elbow to his stomach coming from Yuno.

Mahiru giggled. “It’s like a challenge- two people eat it at the same time.” She pulled a piece of the candy out of the box she had been fiddling with this whole time as she spoke, twirling it between her fingers before holding it out as example. “Whoever breaks off first loses. Cute, is it not?”

Haruka glanced up at the Pocky in her hand, confusion still evident in his eyes. “But.. what if nobody breaks off…?”

You should have known it would come to this.

Mahiru grinned, and from the corner of your eye you could see Shidou shaking his head slightly as she smiled at the poor boy. “Then they kiss~!” Mahiru’s cheery voice spoke, despite the way Haruka flushed red, turning to hide his face in his hands, face practically steaming.

“O- Oh…” He mumbled, voice muffled by the way he covered it with his hands. He tried desperately to look away, his ears and neck now turning pink in addition to his entire face. Mahiru smiled at him, patting his head when he tried to curl up into a ball and chuckling at his attitude towards the topic.

“Now, since Es didn’t tell us when it was Pocky day a little bit ago-” Es scoffed from the corner, rolling his eyes at Mahiru’s accusing tone. “We’re celebrating late. But celebrating is still celebrating~!”

Fuuta rolled his eyes from the corner where he sat. “And how exactly are we planning on celebrating?”

“Well- Not everyone can really participate, since Amane is a bit too young… But you should all pair up and play at least once, right? We rarely get to do fun things like that here, and it’ll be so exciting-!”

“No way I’m playing this bullshit game.” The boy huffed, standing up without a moment to waste and turning to leave, but let out a yelp when someone grabbed his pantleg, and Mikoto dragged him right back onto the floor, and next to him.

“Sounds good, Mappi-chan!” He hummed, completely ignoring the continued protests from Fuuta who was now being forcefully held against the brown-haired individual.

Mahiru let out another one of her signature giggles before turning to you, flashing you a grin. “You should pair up with Haruka here!” She patted the boy’s head, ruffling his hair slightly as he glanced desperately upwards at you from where his head sat, currently in his arms as he huddled around his knees.

“U- Um- I’m not--”

Mahiru grinned at the both of you, giving you a slight push towards the boy before placing a box of strawberry Pocky in your hands. “Have fun!!” She bounced off in another direction, probably to tease Fuuta and Mikoto a bit, before you glanced back at Haruka, to which he let out a little squeak.

You sighed, incing a bit closer to him so that you could pat his head, to which he immediately leaned into your touch. “Sorry about her… We don’t have to--”

Haruka’s voice was impossibly quiet and timid, but he spoke so quickly you could barely finish your sentence. “....B- But-... I want to.”

You paused. “You do!?”

He nodded his head shakily, partially obstructed face glowing with a rosy blush as he let out an embarrassed breath , cheeks burning with shame. “S- Sorry- I just-” He trailed off, letting out a sound somewhere between a squeak and the sort of whine you would bear from a kicked puppy as he buried his face further into his crossed arms.

“.....Don’t be sorry, I just- Didn’t expect that. Like. At all. But- It’s fine if you want to, I guess-...?”

Haruka snapped his head upwards, hair disheveled from trying hopelessly hide himself from Mahiru as he looked at you with wide eyes. “R- Really?”

Alright, let’s get officially started with our prisoner 001! A bit of a note, some of their crimes are easy to guess if you already have knowledge of their backstory, and some of them are difficult even with that. This one…probably would fall into the difficult category.

Also, feel free to provide judgements of what you’d vote for them, what you think their crime was, and all that.

Personality – He’s a rather laid-back person who doesn’t worry too much about being in Milgram, but if he’s questioned too much, he has a tendency to become short-tempered.

He typically speaks bluntly and is rather unwilling to talk with others. He doesn’t see much of a point in giving too much energy to anything.

He doesn’t usually interact with the other prisoners beyond what’s necessary, but he is willing to be civil during any ordinary conversations.

The MV starts with an extreme close-up of him watching something not shown on screen, and his eyes go wide.

Fuyushi runs after a little girl with light blue hair through a snowy field. Although the girl doesn’t leave any footsteps, Fuyushi does.

The next scene is of him standing in an old-fashioned library, doing research. There’s a montage of him going through maps, highlighting routes, and looking at law books.

He pushes a stack of research across the table to someone, waits a beat, then smiles.

The next scene is in the field, where the girl is gone and Fuyushi is fixing up a hastily constructed snowman.

It cuts to a fancy party, where Fuyushi’s talking with an older man and looking very pleased. The camera cuts away for a few moments, and the man disappears. Fuyushi appears scared for a moment, but then becomes calmer and walks away from the scene.

Red and blue lights start flickering, and Fuyushi panics, pushes the camera away, and starts running.

The scene cuts back to the field, where Fuyushi collapses in the snow, a pool of red under him. Blood is splattered around and behind the girl, but none of it is on her.

The MV closes on a similar shot as the beginning, this time with an older version of the girl, and it’s revealed she has light green eyes and freckles.

 Trivia:

He claims to be innocent, although when asked about who really killed his victim he becomes rather tight-lipped.

Murder is his only major crime.
