Stop comparing Alicent to Cersei. Compare Rhaenyra to Cersei instead.

Let’s go over some similarities they share, shall we.

1. Both Cersei and Rhaenyra had several children with their lover (Jaime and Harwin) and pretended like those children were legitimate even if it was pretty damn obvious in Rhaenyra’s case that they weren’t, and somewhat suspicious in Cersei’s. Alicent didn’t love her husband either, yet her children were all legitimate and fathered by her husband.

2. Both Cersei and Rhaenyra were pretty spoiled children of rich parents that made them believe that their actions will have no consequences, so they could get away with pretty much anything since their daddy has their back. Alicent was never spoiled and never really did anything that she would regret. She always did her duty as wife, mother and queen.

3. Both Cersei and Rhaenyra always pretended like their children are perfect and could do no wrong. I’m cheating a little with this one, tbh, since Cersei kinda knew that Joffrey was fucked up but still, she never really did anything to stop him/fix him. The only time she slapped him was because he asked her “if Robert fucked other women when he grew tired of her.” She never really punished him for everything else he did and always took his side. Alicent always calls out Aegon for his behavior and don’t forget the “you are no son of mine”. Cersei would’ve never said such a thing to any of her children, not even Joffrey. Neither Rhaenyra or Cersei would comfort the rape victim of their child.

4. This one is kinda hard to explain but; both Rhaenyra and Cersei are responsible for the way their children turned out to be. Cersei was responsible for Joffrey being the way he was, and Rhaenyra was responsible for Lucerys’ behavior (i will never shut up about him cutting Aemond’s eye off). But you cannot fucking blame Alicent for Aegon being a rapist (i haven’t read the books but as far as i’m aware, that never even happened in the books, it’s just a show thing to demonize the Greens. Correct me if i’m wrong).

5. Even tho both were women, neither Cersei or Rhaenyra ever were feminists. They only cared for themselves and their own well being, as well as their children’s. Alicent has always been an altruist and although she doesn’t do much to overthrow patriarchy either, she doesn’t really have the power to do that. But again, at least she cared for others and the smallfolk, not just for herself.

6. Cersei kills or threatens anyone who dares speak to her or her children the wrong way, and Rhaenyra isn’t much different, being afraid that the truth about her bastards might come out. Alicent was not an usurper, she never tried to silence others for the truth, since she has nothing to hide.

What do Alicent and Rhaenyra have to do with Cersei?

-Alicent is how Cersei envisions herself as: A smart, adept and ambitious politician who despite being a woman, is respected by everyone, even her enemies.

-Rhaenyra is how Cersei really is: A woman who was named by her father as heir after the death of her father, lost her children and has a massive sense of entitlement and stupidity. Not for nothing Rhaenyra is called Maegor with Teats.

About Cersei's smart, I want to say:

>The book makes it a point that Cersei, although quite capable at first, slowly starts losing her mind and descending into madness and alcoholism as soon as she starts losing her children and father and becomes increasingly paranoid and mentally ill, which makes her a terrible decision maker.

>The show is a different story entirely though. There are two quotes about her intelligence; One by Tywin Lannister, when he told her she was not as smart as she thought she was. The other by Tyrion, when he said he considers her to be of above average intelligence. One doesn't necessarily negate the other; Cersei may be quite smart but she's not the political mastermind she may think she is, which is why she underestimates everyone around her which backfired with the High Sparrow.

She outsmarted the Starks and the Tyrells but that's because they vastly underestimated her ruthlessness. She made a bad deal with the High Sparrow because she in turn underestimated his ambition as one she considered to be a man of the Gods.

I feel that the last season made Cersei out to be more intelligent then she is in the books, and I think that's partly because they didn't show the negative consequences of some of her more stupid decisions.

For example, I thought blowing up the Sept with the children/siblings/spouses of most of her allies in it was pretty stupid and I was convinced she would face at least some consequences of that in the last season - but that wasn't shown on screen in the way I expected. I would imagine every noble family in Westeros must have lost someone in the explosion as it seemed like most of the court were present. Not to mention general people from Kings Landing, but then we get to the next season and in Kings Landing it's almost business as usual. Yes the Tyrells rose up against her, but that was pretty the only difference.

I thought we'd see noble families slowly turning against her, and possibly even some of her own army but none of that happens at all. We don't even get a hint of protest from the survivors of the High Sparrow's movement. (I think there must have been some somewhere).

Personally I think show Cersei's intelligence is slightly above average; she's not as stupid as some think, but she's not the mastermind she thinks she is either. Her smarts is not her biggest weapon though, her ruthlessness is.

About Cersei and Rhaenyra you are right.

•Both have a bastard named Joffrey. Another hint to the similarity that the author wants us to notice.

•Both seduce kingsguard who turn against them - Osmund Kettleback and Criston Cole

•Both seduce bodyguards sworn to protect - 3 Kettleback bros and Harwin Strong

•Both have controversial sexual relationship with family member - Lancel, Jaime, Daemon

•Both have sex at the funeral of an immediate family member - Joffrey and Laena

•Both feel victimised despite being in positions at the top of the socio political hierarchy

•Both feels oppressed by their feminity and resent the gender roles attributed to them by a patriarchal system.

•Both feel entitled to power and overestimate their capabilities - Cersei feels entitled to power and deteriorates Kings landing after Tywin almost secures everything despite the disaster created by her actions. And Rhaenyra does the same after Daemon almost single-handedly secures the throne despite her missteps.

In a way, Alicent Hightower is everything Cersei wants to be or envisions herself as, along with Visenya Targaryen:

-All of them are the mothers of kings who sat on the Iron Throne, with their sons being inept Kings.

-All of them are strong willed women who are willing to do whatever it is necessary to advance their families interests.

Difference? Visenya and Alicent are actually smart and adept politicians (specially Alicent) and not narcissistic imbeciles like Cersei.

I agree with you. Alicent is a good queen and a smart woman and I love her, she one of my favorite.

Not to mention that our poor Alicent is always anxious (just look at her hands) which doesn't surprise me because she is a child bride married to an old man (like many girls/women of ASOIAF)

For me, Alicent is more akin to Margery Tyrell Than Cersei Lannister

I have been hearing people compare Alicent and her ambitions to that of Cersei. This is something I noticed long before the series even started where people compared the Father-Daughter duo of Alicent and Otto with that of Cersei and Tywin.

Most recently with the mini trial where Aemond eye was taken out people drew parallels to the incident at the Trident where Joffery got bit. Most people comparing Alicents demand for Luke's eye with that of Cersei demanding Lady's death.

However I beg to differ. Alicent is no where as malicious, impulsive or sadistic as Cersei. I think Alicent is a clever player like Margery since I see more parallels between these two.

>Both use friendly manipulation to have their way rather than senseless brutality. While Cersei dealt with her problems in senselessly stupid and violent ways. Margery and Alicent use manipulation. Just look at how Margery dealt with the people of flea bottom, Sansa and Joffery to have things shift in her favor. She used her sweet words to convince people to her side. Similarly in the last episode Alicent by showing sympathy to the servent girl was able to hide Aegon's horrible deeds. If she was like Cersei she would have blamed the servent girl for seducing Aegon and would have her killed but instead she choose the Margery tactic.

>Both take influence from their mentors. Margery never acted on her own. Ollena Tyrell was the one pulling her strings and Margery actually listened hence she was so successful in playing the game of thrones. Cersei on the other hand outright disobeyed Tywin on many instances which again had severe consiquences for House Lannister. Infact I would argue if Cersei was more like Tywin then ultimately the LANNISTERS would have won. It's her ruthlessness that brought the houses downfall. Arming the faith militant was something Tywin would have never done nor would have needed. But since Cersei only understood the language of senseless violence to have things go her way she did it anyways after Tywins death and the rest is history. Alicent doesn't seem to be like this. She listens to Otto and it can be aruged that Otto is the one pulling her strings.

>They both loved their husbands. Say what you want but despite being unsatisfied with their marriages both women were faithful to their husbands. This not just shows a sense of duty and responsibility but also shows some hint of humanity in them. Margery despite Renlys preference tried her best to conceive and have a happy marriage with him. Likewise even though Viserys is so old Alicent took care of him. Alicent knows that Viserys death is what will elevate Aegon therefore it was in her best interest to have him killed one way or the other yet she choose to look after him and seems genuinely concerned for him. Cersei instead had killed Robert and threatened to have Jamie killed by the mountain and even had Bronn go to him with a cross bow showing that she has no sense of love or loyalty towards anyone. I theorize that if Tywin was not as strong and influencial as he was, Cersei would have no problem having him killed as well if it served her propose. Of couse Tywin was too strong and useful for anyone to want or even think of him being killed but the point I'm making is that relationships like Father, brother or husband mean nothing to her (her children being an exception and even that is becuz she sees them as an extension of herself rather than humans who deserve love and loyality) she is just power hungry (Lena Headey say so too). Meanwhile Margery and Alicent value relationships. Both genuinely care for their father/grandmother unconditionally and both were loyal to their husbands.
