“I am okay with any ship, as long as its legal”
I have a few problems with this phrase.
First of all, obviously, is that there is no law for shipping. Which makes it impossible to call a ship legal or illegal. Fictional crimes are not crimes, whether you like it or not. There is no law that would protect fictional characters from abuse, physical or sexual.
Second of all, law is different everywhere. Somewhere gay relationships are illegal. Somewhere cousin marriage is legal. What country’s law are you talking about when you’re calling a ship illegal? USA? Still different law in every state. And, i mean, doesn’t it sound weird to say “i only like ships that would be legal according to Michigan law”?
And i also want to ask some questions. Does this phrase imply that, for example, a ship between a 17-year-old and a 18-year-old is problematic? Because technically, this kind of relationship irl is illegal in some places.
Does this phrase imply that large age gaps ships are okay? Because a relationship between a 19 and a 59 year old would technically be legal irl. Yet a lot of anti have problems with age gap ships.
A lot of the time when these issues and questions are asked, proshippers are being called ‘disingenuous’, because ‘you obviously knew what they meant’! And like, yeah, i kind of do know what you mean from context- context being, that anti use the word legal as replacement for ‘morally acceptable to me’.
And i do not think that the word legal should be a replacement for ‘morally acceptable’. Because legality doesnt equal morality! And because in the world that we live in, words still mean things. And mixing the meaning of the words ‘legal’ and ‘morally acceptable’ could be very dangerous. I am sure you know why.
