Somewhere, in another universe, Byler is canon.
In another universe, we all turned on our screens Christmas Day and found ourselves cheering at the top of our lungs.
In another universe, the homophobes got pissed and shut their own screens off, instead of cheering at a shitty ending solely bc they “didn’t make the two boys kiss”
In another universe, the ending of Stranger things would encourage viewers to go back and look at things through a new lens, keeping the show alive for years to come instead of moving on immediately and even going so far as to tell others barely a month later to just “move on. it’s not that deep. the shows over. get over it”.
In another universe, the rest of the world would finally see what we’ve seen all along, instead of being called delusional by everyone, even your own friends, bc from an outsider perspective, that’s all we really were, in the end. Delusional and so fucking naive, thinking they’d actually make our “silly little ship” canon.
In another universe, maybe in every universe except ours, Byler would go down as one of the greats in shipping culture, stranger things as a subtextually rich show with an insane amount of detail and foreshadowing, a staple of the film community that would take its place in history.
Maybe in another universe, but not this one.
And so the global phenomenon that was Stranger Things will slowly fade out of existence. The world will forget about this show that once dominated pop culture for nearly a decade. The fandom will still exist, at least for a while, hurt and broken and belittled by everyone else, but eventually will find its own little corner of the internet, and byler will become its own niche of what could’ve been.
And the kids will keep conforming. The kids will keep growing up in the vicious cycle they’ve been forced into.
The Will’s of the world will continue to believe their love doesn’t matter, that it’s just a “stupid crush”, that the only way they will ever find acceptance and happiness is to run away from everyone and everything they’ve ever known and become a stereotype bc that’s what they’re supposed to do.
The El’s of the world will continue to believe that the only way to break free from abuse is death, that being in a toxic relationship is better that not being in one at all, that love at first sight is real and the first person you meet is the one you should stay with no matter how incompatible you are
And the Mike’s of the world will continue to believe that everyone will leave them behind eventually, because that’s what they deserve, that they’re deserve to be alone bc of how they’ve treated those around them, that they’re not worth anything bc of their past mistakes.
They’ll all continue to live in fear of their own feelings, in fear of their futures, in fear of the world around them. And although a simple TV show wouldn’t automatically fix that, it could’ve been a stepping stone to change for the better.
But I guess it was never meant to be.
Sometimes I have to sit back after finishing reading a fanfiction and just think. Like, this author has bestseller talent and yet they decided to dedicate their time writing fanfiction on the internet. I have such a long way to go.
Excuse me while I cry remembering that Rin thought Altan was going to kiss her when he grabbed her by the face before sacrificing himself and that Nezha was going to kiss her as well during their boat ride but neither never did. She was just a young woman at the end of the day who wanted love and romance and never got any 🥲
I need to write a fic in which Anakin has to dress up as a Sith for some silly Jedi play and Obi-Wan is horrified to find out that unhinged pretty boy with murder stroll and golden eyes gets him all hot and bothered
“ladies, don’t let anybody tell you you are ever past your prime.”
