i don’t like how a lot of older rgu analysis that i find is so scared of using the word rape. even if you think anthy, utena, and touga’s relationships with akio are “consensual” (which whatever. that’s a topic for another day) that is a man in his mid 20s and three teenagers, two of which are middle schoolers, one of which being his little sister. definitionally statutory rape. like i feel insane when i see people call episode 33 “akio’s seduction of utena” or when people dance around the subject of akio molesting anthy and touga on an episodic basis. everyone needs to get more woke

What she hasn’t told Subhoiem, or Alaric, or even Thorn, is that she left the Court with precious photographs that she took when someone gave her a Polaroid as a gift from the mortal world.

She keeps them in a little box, in a drawer, secret.

And every once in a while, alone, she’ll take the box and look through each one.

Her favourite is the photograph with her and Mama laughing and Subhoiem smiling fondly beside them even in exasperation.

She took it the year before she fled.

Happier times.

Part of her wonders if Subhoiem kept his. Wonders if the little snapshot that she had framed as a gift still sits on his desk. Did he smash the frame in rage? Did he burn the photograph? Did he burn all of them? Did any of his attendants save them from destruction for the days when he misses them so much it aches?

He is a lonely god now, that much Lilé knows. And every time she holds those photographs, every moment she looks at the candid stillnesses, her heart grieves a little more.

You see, even monsters are loved by someone.
