Redesign In A Day
Today I totally overhauled the opening level of Lucid Road. Three reasons: The first, I found the original design to be like someone’s first Half Life mod level. You’ve seen it before: Standard square rooms, an unimaginative and mostly non-sensical layout, and a space that exists only to itself and not part of a greater context.
Secondly, the first apartment just didn’t tell me anything about the protagonist of Lucid Road. True, I’m yet to do the heavy lifting when it comes to detailing the space with narrative but already you get a sense of time, place, personality and income just through the level design. These are the important steps.
And thirdly, the first apartment was built around the purpose of displaying a space. This apartment is built around key interactions and events that will play out later in the game. The overall blockout was done in ~three hours and I was able to move onto the small/fun details (like that giant Melbourne panorama out the window).
