Catch me if you can, Mr.Holmes
The crime genius, nemesis of Sherlock Holmes. I’m sure everyone heard about Moriarty at least once in their life. But watching the crime solving of the biggest detective the world has seen, we couldn’t really get behind the mind of the mathematics professor who behind the scenes orchestrated a crime revolution. Till Yuukoku no Moriarty came out.
It’s a well-known fact that Production I.G often gives us some very well done series like Psycho-Pass or Haikyuu. In autumn of 2020 the studio animated Yuukoku no Moriarty (Moriarty the Patriot), a manga by Takeuchi Ryousuke (plot) and Miyoshi Hikaru (art). In the end we got a decent anime that tells us a famous story from a completely new perspective.
William James Moriarty (voiced by Saitou Soma) is the genius second son of a noble family. Because of his knowledge and quick thinking he gives advice to common folk of 19th century Britain. Turns out, on many occasions it isn’t just advice on how to make flowers for sale live longer. William dreams of destroying the system of Great Britain where nobles rule over the poor.
Starting Moriarty the Patriot I thought of it as just another detective story. I expected crime solving through the episodes. And how wrong I was. The anime doesn’t need us to become second Shinichi Kudo, but shows us the truth of the crime from the start and highlights the process of bringing the crime to life. When you discard your expectations taken from the original works written by Doyle, the show will really shine with it’s interesting storytelling and well written characters. The most important one is William, the brain of the revolution, helped by his siblings : the oldest, Albert (Satou Takuya) with high standing in society, and the most loyal Louis (Kobayashi Chiaki), the youngest Moriarty.
The animation of Yuukoku no Moriarty is clean and nice to watch. I was only displeased from time to time, seeing the passersby being animated using CGI. But that could just be my aversion towards computer animation. The biggest advantage of the series are well animated movement of characters and their expression (and of course, animation of hair like in the scene where Sherlock starts laughing).
Yuukoku no Moriarty is a well-done story about the Crime lord himself. Don’t be surprised if you binge the whole 13 episodes of the first season in one sitting. It’s that interesting. And don’t skip the opening done by Tasuku Hatanaka. ;) ***** Nearly a year ago I wrote that review in polish and posted it on my polish tumblr but later decided against having it and deleted the blog haha
Now I’m sharing it here in english. Excuse my english as it’s not my first language and some sentences most probably sound weird ;.;
