TWO women, both mid-thirties to early-forties sit in the front seats. It’s mid early morning. The passenger is mid conversation on the phone.

Combinations and Mockups-

The image on the left represent my mockups of what I intend to do for the project 1A graphic illustration. I intended to combine the ideas of line, stencil, repetition and paper cutting, to form a cohesive image full of whimsy, just like Ghibli’s films. In deconstructing my image into intended elements, I realized that creating my image would be much simpler than I thought.  

The steps I would take also embody the ideas which I would like to represent in my final graphic illustration. First, the papercutting of the stencil would be filled in with white onto the black background I would use as my base. Then, the totoro elements I will cut out will be filled in with white as well and stuck onto the black background. After that, I will paper cut out the image of the flying house onto white paper and glue it on. Finally, I will use the principles of line to construct the lined background from my very first initial line work. I chose the graphic images of the witch and the moon with the flying house as a way to create the sense of whimsy I wanted, as they mostly looked and represented children’s fairytales, of which these creatures could only be the result of one’s imagination. Following that, the Totoros were meant to pay homage to one of the most important title characters of Ghibli and make reference to studio Ghibli itself. The line image at the back was meant to enforce a certain sort of cohesiveness and tie the image together to bring about the idea of resolution to the image. All in all, I believe that the graphic illustration I would like to represent and put forth embodies the Ghibli brand in its simple, yet charming and whimsical manner.

PROJECT 1

Project 1a

Two smooth, flat and sharp triangles cross each other, held by a pin. At this meeting point, the middle, or the base of the triangles, two nearly identical circular forms begin. Their curvature is accentuated by texture that’s either smooth, or sticky.  One of these circular forms is curved to accommodate a human thumb, and is slightly smaller than the other, similar section which could hold 2-3 other fingers. When in motion, the tool open and closes, with the two triangles prying apart and closing tightly.

*long *thin *hooked *looped Definitely metallic, when not held, the surface grows cold. It is solid yet thin, long yet small. The looped part seems to have some kind of inner ridges, three that are quite thinner than the thin pole itself. It is rounded and smooth until you touch the middle portion of the longest part of the body. It flattens out and has a bumpy texture as if there was raised wording on it. One side the bumps are longer than the other. The tip of the object is hooked over and sanded to a flat edged point.
