Project 27: Self-Portrait

For this prompt, I decided to dust of my camera. Most of the time when I have my camera I am taking photos of others; I never seem to turn the camera around and take photos of myself  (minus the ones I take with my selfie stick.) Had a fun time messing around with some new post production techniques and learning Adobe Lightroom. Enjoy!

Project 27: Self-Portrait - something new

When I started thinking about this prompt, I was trying to come up with a clever way to interpret it that was catered to my strengths, but the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to do a literal self portrait. Now— as you might be able to tell— I don’t do a whole lot of traditional art. Even more so, I’ve never done digital painting with a tablet… ever.

I wanted to make sure I wasn’t getting complacent in my work, relying only on my existing skills— so I considered it a bit of a challenge to myself to push, grow, learn, & share in areas I’ve never explored before… Even if they aren’t very polished just yet :)

I definitely learned a lot & I hope you like it! 

Also, I should probably shave.

Project 27: Self-Portrait - Character Bold

This prompt was to create a self-portrait. Wanting to push both myself and the envelope with this challenge, I decided to go in a direction that was more representational of who I am rather than literal.  I decided to create a typeface that was very indicative of who I am as a person. I sat myself down and just started exploring letter forms and shapes. I was rather irrational with my letter-making, making decisions based on ‘want’ and ‘feel’ vs. ‘consistency’ and ‘reason’. I didn’t really give myself the chance to filter or refine. I was very much in the moment with this project which I think helped it to be some of the truest work I’ve done lately. Designing purely based on my emotions and remaining in the present is probably the purest reflection of myself and how I want to be represented.

Project 27: Self Portrait

When I was thinking about what I wanted to do for this project, I knew right away that I wanted to do a literal self-portrait. I have been painting and designing from a young age and have had this project assigned to me countless times but I have never done a literal self-portrait. I have always disliked seeing myself or hearing myself on film or in photos so this got me out of my comfort zone but I had a blast making it!  I wanted to make a home movie type video with a bunch of snapshots of things that are important to me or of my quirks that make me who I am.

This video is a combination of new clips filmed for this project and iPhone clips from the past couple of months so forgive the quality!

The song is Jungle by X Ambassadors.

Project 27 Prompt: Self-Portrait

The goal is to create and design a self-portrait of yourself. Dive inward and find ways to express the parts that make you…you. There will be zero restrictions in terms of medium or scope. Submissions will be posted on August 23rd throughout the day. 

As a special part of the project, we are opening up submissions for this project to every one of our followers. For those choosing to submit, please limit your submission to one image and have it in by end of day of August 22nd. If you want to use a gif, Tumblr has problems if the file exceeds 2MB so be conscious of that. We’ll then post a selection of submissions at some point during the following week for everyone to see. Use the Submit link in the nav to send us your files as a zip. Please include a text document with your name and one link (optional) along with your image (between 1000-1500px wide) for review. This is a trial to see if people are interested and if it works out and is something fun, expect to see the opportunity again in the future.
