Jason goes insane because of experiments SAND inflicts on him. But then he kills them all and keeps doing the experiments to himself because they feel good and make him feel powerful. The experiments are short-term and wear off before ten minutes have passed.
He raids their facilities and find a room with a strange-looking creature inside of it, and then he grabs the container it's in (it's about the size of a basketball, maybe smaller) and takes it through the portal back to his own universe.
And from that creature he starts to create his plan for the baen. He makes up excuses to his parents, who are drug addicts and apathetic, but not technically abusive. Jessica wonders what he's doing in the garage all the time, but he won't let anyone in to see what he's working on.
Several days later his parents come into the garage to investigate. Jason kills them with a crowbar and unveils his secret to Jessica. The baen hive queen is hatched, and Jason makes Jessica swear to help him create a new world where everyone is ruled. He's vague as to who's ruling them until a month later, when he burns their house down and orders the baen queen to kill everyone inside a bank, which he then blacks out and robs by making the entire street lose power. He detonates a chemical bomb on the surface and travels via sewer to rob the bank, so anyone watching won't find him. It's not time yet.
After he has the money, he travels back and finds Jessica taking care of the baen, which has killed a pair of hikers that had found their hiding spot in a meadow on a hill nearby the remains of their house. Jason and Jessica watch while the baen queen eats their bodies and grows bigger with each bite.
Jason and Jessica travel to Washington, where they hide in the city in an old apartment building's basement. The baen queen starts making eggs in the storage room, and soon they have twenty new baen to watch over.
An opportunity arises to take them to London. They take it, and one of the baen travels with them in their bag. Once in the city, the baen goes on a rampage, killing everyone on the train station. This baen becomes the colossal baen in Alternate5, years later. The baen continues eating and growing. Meanwhile, back in the USA, the queen baen is still hatching eggs and growing the baen. A construction worker visits the apartment and is eaten.
Back in London, the baen continues eating in the night, feeding mostly on hobos, growing bigger every time it feeds. Jason orders it to take out the government buildings, but Jessica stalls him. She travels back to the USA and is almost attacked by the new baen, but the queen baen stops them. Jessica realizes that the baen are intelligent and starts talking to them. None of them talk back, and that's when she realizes that the queen baen is the one that controls them, not her or Jason.
She takes ten more baen with her on a private jet that they bought with the money from the bank. Private investigators and the FBI track some of the money to the apartment in Washington, but the baen eat them and escape from the apartment. More and more baen are hatched and created by the baen queen, and news travels quickly.
Jason launches his plan and lets the baen loose in London, where they ravage the countryside until they're each at least twenty feet tall. Jason leads them to Parliment and other official buildings and kills everyone inside. More baen are being created every hour, and even if these are dead, it's too late to stop them.
The police, national guard, and army try to launch a missile strike on the baen, but they sense the missile launch and one baen flies up into the sky and collides with the missile. The baen start gathering food for the queen so she can keep laying eggs.
In London, things are a mess and only getting worse. The baen are swarming over the countryside and Jason discovers that the queen is their leader through telepathy. Another baen is discovered to be a queen and starts laying eggs in london. Within a week, most of London is destroyed by futile attempts of the army to get rid of the baen, which only feeds and grows the baen. Eventually they start sending drones so that they don't lose any soldiers, but the baen outsmart them and lay traps for the drones and send them falling into large holes in the ground that the baen have dug.
Back in the USA, Washington is under quarantine, but that fails. The baen spread over the entire countryside and start eating people, plants, animals, anything they can digest--which is quite a lot.
After three weeks of this, the baen have spread like a plague. Hundreds of thousands of people have died and the army is on the scramble to defeat something they're not equipped for. Every time they try a missile strike, the baen either sense it telepathically because of the queen baen or they send several baen to intercept the missiles in the air.
Jason launches his campaign and proclaims himself a prophet. He ridicules religion in general and challenges anyone to try and defeat the baen. There are fifty-eight assassination attempts on Jason within the next week, but each time they're thwarted by the baen. Jason keeps plotting and then he trains the queen baen to teletpathically talk to all of her kin and tells them not to kill people who "swear to life on the Phoenix".
Within a year, most of the world is at war. The baen scourge keeps attacking and the rest of humanity has to keep falling back.
Five years later, the world is in ruins, and then an accidental switch of a lever on Jason's alternate-universe portal sends two kids into the world he and his sister had destroyed. Nearly a year after that, Jason and Jessica are killed, and humanity is left desolate. The only remaining survivors of Jason's purge travel back to our world. A genetically-modified child and a clone.
SOMEONE HELP ME MY MIND IS FLAILING! SAND is how Jason gets the idea for the baen. He also gets a prototype. I AM HAVING DIFFICULTY DESCRIBING HOW I FEEL. I THINK I FEEL ELATED. This is the closest I've ever gotten to saying "I don't know what my brain is doing" because I totally know what my brain is doing but wow.
WOW.
SO LIKE. What. And yes. Because this. And the portal. Yes. YES.
YESSSSSS. I HAVE IT ALL FIGURED OUT.
