i’ve just started a short professional development course on teaching/training and i’ve been looking forward to it alllllll year because its one of the areas i most want to pick up skills!!! its only a few weeks so i know it’ll be fairly general, but i’m still hoping it’ll be valuable for me.
i obviously do a lot of one-on-one with students when they come in needing help. based on my own opinion/experiences the level of success in those interactions is usually dependent upon the student’s willingness to understand/learn. sometimes students want a solve but aren’t really invested in how to carry that skill forward, so i can see them disengage when they realise i’m not simply giving them the answer lol. but maybe there is more i can do on my end in those situations! i’ve never learned how to give instruction so i’m just going off my instincts, and building on the experiences i’ve had as time goes on.
but my expectation is really that this course will help in group environments. sometimes i conduct little skill sessions in classes and in those cases i’m talking to 10-30 people. i don’t have any knowledge to base my ‘techniques’ on, i’m typically allotted about 30 minutes and just bring handouts/speak/take questions for the time i’ve got. i’m positive there’s a way to make those sessions more fruitful, even if i’ve only got a limited amount of time. eventually i’d like to have sessions based in the library itself. this is entirely dependent upon a) the teachers allowing me the time, b) getting my hands on any resources i might need and, most importantly, c) having the time to design the sessions. i... don’t anticipate c happening in the near future so this is a distant goal but i think it would be soooo beneficial to the students, and also save myself time in the long term.
like i said, this course is probably just going to be introductory theory but i hope it’ll at least give me something to structure future instruction around, i’ll at least know what boxes i need to tick, and i can self-evaluate against actual criteria and improve.
