Day 2 of hayffie week is canon divergence so here have a VERY old prompt (writing dates back from august 2021 if you can believe it) that almost died in the hoard.

AU after thg, no rebellion, no Catching Fire, the kids mentor

Prompt : I'm not sure if you're currently receiving prompts, but if you are, there's a bit from chapter 90 of HADS: “That wasn’t very proper. She should have helped Katniss back to bed and kept up the pretense of the oblivious and daft escort. That was what Haymitch had told her to do and that was probably the safest way to go about this. It would have been different if those Games had been normal. She would have been able to be a little more herself with Peeta and Katniss, not escort Effie Trinket but just Effie… Perhaps they would have liked her more then.” My prompt is that this scenario happens. That as mentors, Katniss and Peeta slowly catch glimpses of who Effie really is, and start realising that her oblivious and daft escort act is just that- an act.

The Price Of Hope

“I just don’t get why we don’t ask Cinna to…” Katniss insisted – for what must have been the fiftieth time since she had been told on the train that Cinna and Portia would not be their stylists this year.

And for the fiftieth time, Effie took a deep breath and tried to remind herself to be patient. This was the children’s first year of mentoring, the Quell was stressful enough as it was with the age range lowered to seven and them having a ten year-old on their hands – not that she was complaining, because of the volunteering ban placed on the Quell, One had two eight year-old and Seven had a seven year-old and a nine year old – and there was too much to do, too much to teach to let one grate on one’s nerves.

Prompt : I offer you a prompt in the form of a plot twist: Haymitch is going into the arena with Katniss for the 75th games. No fake baby bomb for Katniss, but Effie tells him she's pregnant before he leaves

You know I HAD to do it. It’s too good to resist for long XD The title comes from the song “You” by Keaton Henson that kept popping up when I was writing it.

My Life’s Best Part

Effie’s staring at him, dumfounded, and Haymitch can’t help but think he should have listened to Chaff and not waited until the last moment to unload everything on her. But even now that he’s told her, he still doesn’t think it’s a good idea to tell her anything at all. He still doesn’t think…

“I wouldn’t have told you any of it.” he adds with a wince, turning away from her and crossing the short distance to the roof’s hip-high wall. They waited until the children came back down to sneak up there, to have their own moment – a moment that isn’t about desperately fucking each other in her room, too aware that it probably will be the last time. The roof is quiet outside of the distant clicking of the wind chimes she hang there a couple of years ago, the rush of the city spreading at their feet has long become background noise he barely even registers anymore. “If I had a choice I wouldn’t have told you any of it.”

None of the rebellion. None of the plan. None of it.

One Day

The moment Finnick stepped a foot into the penthouse, Effie was on him, fussing like a mother hen, making strangled noises and smoothing the creases of his shirt like it was the most important thing in the world.

Haymitch shared a look with Chaff, rolled his eyes and gently but firmly steered her away from the boy. If the other senior victor from Four was to be believed, Finnick was black and blue – and Stella wasn’t prone to exaggeration, except where Brutus was concerned…

“You’re okay, kid?” he asked, a little worried.

He kept a firm hold on Effie’s arm because she looked like she wanted to fly right back to the boy and check him over again. For the most part, Finnick looked fine except for a stitched up gash over his eyebrow that hopefully wouldn’t leave a scar.

Just a little something post MJ that’s more focused on Katniss and Effie’s relationship than hayffie but still there is some hayffie for you in there ;) I’m not that cruel.

Beverage Choices

It wasn’t so unusual for Effie to find one of her former victors in her kitchen first thing in the morning that she was surprised when she saw Katniss sitting at the round table, a cup of coffee clutched between her hands.

“I hope you left some for me, dear.” she hummed, still not quite awake. She was never awake before her morning coffee.

“In the pot.” Katniss mumbled.

Effie darted a glance at the old clock on the wall, musing it was entirely too early for any of them to be up. Dawn was barely poking in the horizon, she saw, when she passed by the window over the sink. Haymitch would sleep for hours yet because he still preferred to sleep when it was light and she should have been snuggled up against him at least for another couple of hours. Nightmares had kept her up all  night though. And she didn’t feel like lying in bed, mulling over bad things she couldn’t control.

Prompt: I have a prompt request (in case it hasn't been done already). I'd love to read about how Haymitch argued with the game makers about Katniss' plastic surgery, and Haymitch and Effie dealing with the consequences of the game together before the kids woke up.

A Real Woman

Haymitch was very familiar with the white corridors of the Games Clinic for having spent enough times in there over the years. It was the first time he ended up arguing with the doctor in the corridor though.

It would have probably been easier if he had been talking to the usual doctor, the one who had been there forever – since before his Games – and who had taken care of every of his little problems ever since. He felt like he knew the guy well enough to be reasonable with him. The guy in front of him? He was young, arrogant and he was sneering down at him like…

“What is the matter?” came the familiar sing-song voice of his escort, quickly followed by the hurried click click sound of her heels on the tiles. “Haymitch, I can hear you shouting from Peeta’s room!”

The rebuke was delivered in a chiding tone but the hand that she slid around his arm, nails digging into his flesh, as soon as she reached him was more of a warning.

“How’s he?” he asked immediately.

A New Home

The silence was awkward as they all loitered outside the house Katniss had picked for herself and her family. They had all toured it together in front of the cameras, his hand locked in Katniss’ because that was the game they were expected to play.

The moment the camera had shut down, Peeta had rushed outside. His family had followed him, probably feeling just as out of place inside with the Everdeens, Haymitch and Effie as he felt.

He watched each of them now and he wasn’t sure what to say, how to bridge the gap. What did you say to people who hadn’t bothered to care if you came back or not? Who had chosen to support the competition more than their own flesh and blood?

Rye, only one year older and now definitely safe from Reapings, had kept his hands in his pockets ever since they had greeted him at the train station, unable to meet his eyes. Peeta knew why, of course, for the same reason he hadn’t been able to come into that room at the Justice Building all those weeks earlier and say his goodbyes. With Katniss having volunteered for her younger sister and him not having raised a finger. Well…

Prompt: Ellana, darling! I love thirteen sheep, and I was wondering if I could prompt something based on that. A one shot where Snow finds out about Theo, and Effie has to get him out of the Capitol. The first person she finds who she thinks will help is Chaff. (Or someone else, I just really want Chaff to find out about Theo somehow.)

It’s been a long time since I did something Theo-related. This is kind of a prequel though so you don’t need to read the other stories to understand it (You can find them in that tag though) ;) It takes place a year before Thirteen Sheep.
