“Victim Blaming” + Protective Measures
A little bit of a rant here, but something has been annoying me lately and that is the term victim blaming. When there is a story of a women being attacked in some way or another, if someone asks a question regarding the victim then they’re automatically blaming the victim. This annoys me. I will give an example so I don’t just look like a babbling idiot.
Recently in the news headlines here in Geelong, Australia there was a 14 year old girl who was gang raped at 4 am when she was walking from a party to a park alone to meet a friend in a suburb she was not familiar with.
I originally saw this story on Clementine Ford’s facebook page and naturally there were a bunch of people wondering where her parents were and what was she doing out alone at 4 am. These people were apparently victim blaming! Now if they were saying it like, “oh it was her fault, she shouldn't have been out so late!” then yes, I would agree, but instead they were saying things like “what is a 14 year old doing out at 4 am, where were her parents?” They were simply questioning why protective measures were not used to keep this child safe?!
This brings me to the “teach men not to rape” line that feminists frequently use... *sigh* I don’t even know where to begin about the stupidity of that one... They believe that it is wrong that women should have to use protective measures when going about her day to day life. They believe that men should just not rape and that we need to educate our men to not rape by talking to them about it. I do believe that men who rape know fully well that rape is wrong and that they shouldn't be doing it. Not to mention that the line “teach men not to rape” is incredibly sexist and isn't sexism what they are trying to obliterate?
Protective measures are a necessary part of life for both men and women and if we didn't use them we would not survive. There is always going to be criminals in the world, so to safe guard ourselves, we need to use protective measures. If a child is removed from their home by child protection, the only way they can be placed back in that home is if there are more protective measures in place than risks.
