Fair Food Meets Fast Food. Southwest Florida. Top: Roger Butterfield sharing historical political cartoons, about worker’s rights, from the library of texts, documents and books he manages. “This room is where we interview escaped slaves”, Said Butterfield, age 27, who is the archivist for the Coalition of Immokalee Workers or CIW. His job consists of organizing, studying, transcribing and preserving the vast number of documents kept in the back of the building pertaining to the history of the organization. The Coalition formed in 1993 in response to the harsh working conditions experienced by migrant farm laborers in southwest Florida. Located in the unincorporated farming town of Immokalee the organization currently has 6,000 members ranging from student allies to faith based groups. Bottom: Church member protesting a local Wendy’s as part of the CIW and Fair food Program. The fast food chain has denied compliance with the Coalition’s code of ethics and fair wage agreement for workers.
