Dr. Deidre Destrange is the world's foremost expert on cybernetics, and has just found out that her research is being used to experiment on children, by the very organization she works for. She gets reassigned to the division managing this, and begins to talk with one of the 'subjects', CO-458; Pavel. Initially hopeful her inside report could reform the program, this confidence quickly deteriorates and she finds herself faced with a choice: go quietly, or make a blast.

protoViolence is a kinetic visual novel and prequel to malViolence, telling the story of Dr. Destrange and how she broke ties with STOP.

I fucking love Deidre Destrange. She's such a refreshingly realistic character to me. She's a good person with a functioning moral compass, but she's also reluctant to take any action against injustice if it would materially backfire on her. She cares about her friends, she doesn't want to throw away the years of her life dedicated to the very thing causing the injustice, she doesn't want to uproot her whole life and worldview, so she denies the fact that drastic action is needed for as long as she possibly can. But that's the thing: once faced with undeniable, vicious child abuse that can only end in complete erasure of a child, she can't ignore it. Plenty of people could. Most of the people in the series did. But Deidre is not just moral; she's principled. Push comes to shove, she's willing to put her bombs where her mouth is and destroy her whole life, burning every bridge she worked so hard to build, to do the right thing. To save a single child that she cares for.
