And there are so many instances of it too - Oscar losing the family money while being the one in charge of it because he's a man with no thought for anything than himself, Peggy choosing a career then leaving working for Mr. Fortune because he was using his position as her employer to push himself onto her, Bertha being ambitious, calculated woman who openly loves and fights for her family, and so many more examples that I'm not including.

I wish, truly wish, that more period dramas show much women were actually integral and not useless entities who never had to work
