I'm the gunner for a search and rescue team in peak dragon country - part 1
I know what you're thinking: what the fuck are you talking about, and where do I sign up. Well let's explain the first and if you'd like, you can DM me for more info as to the latter. Not exactly the best recruiter but I've shared these stories enough times to those of us on the inside and in basic training and it's time that these stories enter the wider world. Technically most of it's classified so I can't tell you exact details all of the time, but I know how to skirt around NDAs like a stripper knows their pole.
A hidden department of the National Park Service entails the PSAR Division: Paranormal Search & Rescue. It's where I work, where we deal with all of the worst cases of ghosts, ghouls, wendigos, witches, and (in my case) dragons. It used to be part of the military, then it was the CIA (especially during the cold war), but ulitmately it landed with us, the national park service. There are a couple of national parks with the remnants of dragon populations in the most remote areas of the park. I can't specify which one I work at, but here's the story I tell all of the newest recruits into the division. All names are edited for privacy.
It was me and Nixon (not the president, that was a different story) hopping into the back of a retrofitted military hummer. We were loading up our 50 cal rifles and shooting the shit, covering the mission briefing. We had a zoologist from the University of Florida coming in to monitor the lastest clutch of a mare dragon. I suppose it makes sense that most dragon specialists come from Florida, they already got gators in the open. Seems like the difference is just a little bit more fire. Doc Long Legs as we called her carried a pack almost as big as she was and loaded into the back of the car between me and Nixon.
"Loving the dry heat." she said.
I laughed, "Hope it doesn't get drier. No one likes their dinner cooked too dry."
"Perhaps tomorrow." she said, "And I'm sure it's nothing some barbacue sause couldn't fix."
This one had a good sense of humor, most of the scientists that came in didn't appreciate us ex-military and our brand of humor. Too focused on their job and the letters after their name. But that's never what they mention when getting gnawed on by a hungry, provoked dragon. Well, I don't know. I'm not the most educated man in the world but I know that 'PhD' and 'Aaaaagh' sound very different. Always the snooper, I cracked open the backpack and saw a number of gizmos I didn't recognize, and some that I did. Thermomoters, camers, and a survey drone, among others.
The driver and other crew members hopped in and we started on our long drive through the southwestern desert, a giant mesa looming in the distance, Old Roost, as we called it. A dragon mare was visible on Old Roost, its usual dull browns had been replaced with a vibrant, burning red. A telltale sign of increased fire production, it could happen for any number of reasons but presence at Old Roost, its proximity in time to the last dragon rut, everything pointed to that old mare having a clutch of eggs.
When dragons laid eggs it was a big event, a once in a career event for all involved. What we knew about dragon chicks and their life cycle was all book learning. They were getting rarer and rarer. Climate change and all that. Hell, the only dragons we have remaining are the comparatively pygmy dragons, the ones that survived the last ice age. It's why they're all holed up in reserves in the most hidden parts of national parks.
Despite my own aloof persona, even I was a little excited. Dragon eggs had a lot of different information swirrling around about them, some said they were nothing more than big ol' rocks, while others said they shimmered like gold. I could've asked the Doc but she was enraptured in some stupid story Hopps (the team conservationist) about some exploit of his that never happened.
The Mesa grew bigger on the horizon until we were half a mile away from it where we stopped. Doc cracked open her pack and brought out a small drone, it had been a long time since anyone got into the Mesa and we sure as hell weren't going to wander around blindly for a human accessible entry point. "What the fuck?" she muttered.
"What do you see?" I asked, crawling over to get a view of the drone's video feed.
"It's not an egg in there."
"Well what the fuck is it?" I asked as I finally saw the screen. On it was the curled up body of a sleeping child.
