[Authors note: i honestly wasn’t expecting to have this out for a few more days. either way, expect some canon divergence from the og script, and some lead up to season 3 events. MILD, barely even there, spoilers for “The worlds biggest ball of twine”]

In this chapter: As we finally get the ball rolling on the main plot line, Reader has finally been made in charge of this rag-tag group of lovable idiots, just in time to be considered the FBI's most wanted. But we don't really have time to focus on that, just throw that into the massive pile of "worry about later" and pray it doesn't get bigger

The end of Something pt 2

FBI’s most wanted

“Well? What do you say?” Klaus is waiting expectantly at you but all you can do is stare at him in shock. You’d never thought this would happen, he didn’t ever seem like the type to get married, and especially to you of all people. You wondered if this was all just some blissful dream you conjured up while you were still passed out on the bed. Or maybe you were in a coma and this was your mind's way of giving you some comfort as you slowly succumb to your injuries.

“Pinch me.” you murmur.

Klaus’ smile slips into a confused frown. “What?”

“Just… if you want my answer, then pinch me. So that I know it’s real, and not just some figment of my comatose mind.”

Slowly, Klaus stands back up to the point where you have to crane your head upwards to look at him. Taking the hand that wasn't holding the ring box, he carefully brings it up, making sure to keep his face carefully blank. Just when you think he’s about to pinch your cheek…

“Ow!”

…He sharply jabs you in the forehead. “Real enough for you, my little universe hopper?”

Oh.

This WAS real.

Klaus Hargreeves just asked you to marry him! “I...yes! Yes I will marry you Klaus Hargreeves!” Your smile lights up the room beautifully and his does too as he lets out a whoop of joy. You don’t think you’ve ever seen him this happy. Even during the time you both got shit-faced with tequila and let a bunch of puppies tackle him at a local pet shop in 2019.

Klaus grabs the ring and slides it onto your left hand, on the ring finger. It wasn’t anything flashy, just a simple moonstone gem in the shape of a full moon, with blue and green diamonds surrounding it in a circle. The band itself was silver, no frills or anything. Looking down, you adjust your hand and watch as it shines in the small light of Elliot’s shop. “It’s beautiful, klaus.” you murmur, “But when did you have time to…”

“Back in san francisco, do you remember when i asked you to keep the cult busy for a day while i went to grab some things before we ran off?” You had a vague recollection of that day, it mainly consisted of pulling quotes out of your head so keechie would shut up long enough for you to get some rest. You didn't realize what he was doing that whole time, only assumed he was getting supplies or money or something. "Let's just say a jeweler owed me a few favors, and I was cashing in." You can't help but laugh in disbelief, and quickly wrap your arms around his neck in a hug. “I love it. It’s beautiful. Should we tell the others or…”

“Tell the others what?”

The two of you jump at the sound of Five's irritated voice and you quickly turn to face him. His posture is tense and there's a hardening of his jaw. You can’t help but smile sheepishly at him. “Well, I guess you’d have been the first to know anyways but uh…we’re engaged!” You move your hand to show Five the ring and he quickly looks down at it. There’s a soft smile on his face and a softening of his eyes that’s the only clear indication he’s happy for you. It’s only for a split second though as the irritated look returns just as fast, and he moves to grab you by the ear and begin dragging you downstairs.

“Ow, ow, ow, ow! Five, what the hell!” you screech and all you hear is Five grumbling under his breath “Absolute morons! One thing. I ask them to do one tiny insignificant thing, and they can’t even do that!” Okay seriously? You knew he was technically old enough to be your dad, but that didn’t mean he had to drag you downstairs like a toddler in time out! Hell, he could have blinked you both downstairs but you assume he’s walking purely to annoy you. Craning your neck, you look to see Klaus standing as far away as possible. “Klaus, a little help here?!”

Klaus grins and waves the hand saying “goodbye”. An ironic statement, really. “Sorry, Schatz, I've learned the hard way not to get in the way of Five’s wrath. I’ll just wait here until he’s done!”

Five cranes his head in Klaus’ direction menacingly and snarls out “Down here. Now. Or I'll make sure you won’t live long enough to see tomorrow, let alone your wedding day! Got it?”

Klaus quickly scrambles downstairs after that, quickly bypassing the two of you with a quick “See you downstairs, my love! Stay strong!”

“Klaus! Gah! Five, you’re such a feral bastard, you know that?!”

“So I've been told!”

You can’t help but sigh in frustration. As you listen to the news reporter go on about the assassination from yesterday, you can’t help but think that you’ve suddenly become the FBI’s most wanted. It didn’t exactly help that you and Klaus were tax dodging cult leaders. And Diego certainly made things worse by running along the grassy knoll, despite your repeated protests. Standing next to Five, you watch the tv in the hopes that maybe none of your names got mentioned.

“Authorities are asking for help identifying several persons of interest at Dealey plaza at the time of the assassination. The FBI believes they may have been acting in concert with the alleged shooter, Lee Harvey Oswald. Vanya Hargreeves, wanted in connection with the deaths of several FBI agents inside the federal building at Dealey plaza.”

“Shit.” you hear Vanya mutter to herself. Well that hope went quickly, didn’t it?

“A Cuban exile known only as Diego…”

Diego looks over at you with a look of confusion. “The hell does he mean, Cuban?”

You shrug and scratch your cheek. You can’t have all the answers all the time, could you?

“...Who recently escaped from the Holbrook Sanitarium. A bare-knuckle boxer with suspected mafia ties who fights under the alias ‘King Kong’. Allison Chestnut, a negro radical responsible for instigating and organizing the recent riots at Stadtlers lunch counter.”

“Unbelievable!” Allison mutters and you squeeze her shoulder in sympathy.

“[Y/N] [L/N], known in certain circles as ‘The Lunar Goddess’...”

“Oh for fucks sake!” You growl out. That name is never gonna go away, is it? “I’m not a damn goddess!”

“Wanted in connection with an officer found dead during the riot at Stadtlers lunch counter.” Ah shit. You quickly look down to avoid Five’s questioning gaze. You knew that’d come back to bite you in the ass eventually.

“And finally, Klaus, the controversial cult leader and known tax evader, believed to be working with [Y/N] [L/N] as well, posing as her so-called ‘Prophet’.” Klaus simply raises an eyebrow at that.

“The FBI is asking the public to be on the lookout for this unidentified boy…” At this it cuts to a picture of Five, coincidentally being shown standing on the knoll with Luther and Diego. “...who they believe is being held hostage by the suspected terrorist network…”

“Well, it’s true” Five quips. “I do feel like I'm being held hostage most days.”

You’re quick to point out one tiny sliver of good news, though. “I mean…at least Ben’s picture isn’t on there. He’s still clean as a whistle!”

Ben smiles at the thought “Glass half full kind of person, aren’t you?” you shrug. “I try.”

It’s silent for a few moments before Diego mumbles out “God, I hate that photo.” and suddenly the irritation floodgates have opened.

“They’re saying I instigated the riot?” Allison scoffs at the notion. “That’s unbelievable.”

“Look,” Luther points out ‘The good news is we restored the timeline and we stopped doomsday. So…”

“Yeah a bunch of real goddamn heroes. We let Kennedy die.” Well technically you supposed that was true but honestly Kennedy HAD to die to maintain the timeline. Good luck getting Diego to believe that though.

Allison is quick to point out the glaringly obvious. “Yeah, and now we’re officially the most wanted people in the world. The FBI is after us, the Dallas police, The secret service. It’s only a matter of time before they hunt us down here.”

“Well, where are we supposed to go?” Vanya asks.

“We have this yurt just outside Reykjavik.” Klaus points out. You quickly shake your head no. You are not going back there for anything. No beds, cold as fuck, nothing but fish to eat and god forbid you try and start any kind of fire to keep warm. “Not happening.” You deny. “Not again. I won’t sleep in furs again, Klaus. I might be low maintenance but damn it I have standards!”

“Oh, come on, schatz. Folks there are a little weird, but lovely. Very welcoming…”

“Hey, numnuts,” Five interrupts “It isn't gonna make much of a difference if the commission knows where or when we are at all times. We have permanent targets on our backs now. Doubly so in [Y/N]s case.”

You look down and bite your thumbnail. You weren’t exactly thrilled to be this popular with so many people for all the wrong reasons. When you look back up all eyes are directly on you. Oh that is so creepy.

“What?”

“What do you mean, what?” Diego scoffs. “What’s our next move?”

“Yeah, I mean, out of all of us, you’re the only one that has any idea of what to do next.” Luther points out, and wow that was weirdly…nice. You think?

You quickly ignore Five's exclamation of “EXCUSE ME?!” and try to focus and remember what was supposed to happen next.

“I…” You sigh quietly. Fine, if this is how they want it. “Diego, you were on the infinite switchboard, right?” Diego has a smug sense of satisfaction on his face at the thought that quickly sours as Five scoffs out “You were on the infinite switchboard?”

“Hell yeah! I made that machine my bitch! Y’all need to recognize i got shit going on y’all don’t even know about!”

“Diego, pipe down, it was the other way around and you know it. Now, if I’m right…Vanya, you need to go call Sissy, see if you can check on her and Harlan.” Vanya quickly runs upstairs and you move so that everyone is facing you.

“Now, look. I won’t lie, the next few hours are gonna suck ass. In a few minutes, Vanya’s gonna realize that somethings wrong with Harlan’s powers.” Five opens his mouth - “And before you ask, Five, this is something Vanya has to explain as i wasn’t there.” -and quickly closes it again. “She’s gonna want help. Because she’ll be planning on going to the farm to try and stop things from getting worse.”

“Now, normally I know everyone’s knee-jerk reaction to this would be to stay put and argue, and box windows and all that stupid crap but guess what? It don’t mean shit when you have an autistic 12 year old with rampant powers, scared out of his mind, about to destroy everything! So here’s what we do -”

“I’m leaving.” Vanya's words cause you to stop short.

“We know.” Allison replies. “[Y/N] here was telling us what was going to happen and what to do next.”

“Before we get into any of that, though,” Five quickly butts in and pushes himself to stand in front of Vanya. “You mind explaining how it is exactly, this Harlan has powers? What did you do?”

Vanya gulps in nervousness. “He drowned, and, uh, somehow I was able to bring him back to life. And now it’s like we’re connected. It’s hard to explain.” all eyes turn to you once more.

“Uh…” You have to rack your brain to try and remember that scene specifically. “Glowing orb thingies went from Vanya into Harlan as a way of resuscitating him? I guess?” you didn’t know, the show never explained it properly.

“He needs my help.” She continues. “I know he needs my help. I need your help, too. I’m scared. And for the first time in my life, I don’t wanna do it alone. I want my family by my side.”

“And we’ll be there.” You’re quick to reassure her, and Vanya smiles at you in gratitude. “But we have to be smart about this. Because it’s not just Harlan that’s the issue here. We also have The Handler and Lila to worry about, too.”

Five’s lets out a quiet “Goddamn it.” and like a switch is flipped everyone gets serious again.

“Wait, Lila? You mean Diego’s girlfriend?” Luther's question has you and Five slowly turning your heads towards Diego, who has a sheepish expression on his face and is rubbing his neck.

“Wow. Sleeping with the enemy.” Five starts.

“You know, I'd say I didn't see this coming except - oh wait! I did.” Snark is like a second language at this point. “What happened to starting over with Eudora?”

Diego just lands you a deadpan stare. “The 1960’s happened.”

Oh. Huh. Fair enough.

“And anyways,” he continues, “Lila’s my EX-girlfriend, thank you very much. Why would she be there?”

“Five?” You point over to him and his response of “She’s the Handler’s demon spawn” opens up a large chorus of groans.

“ANYWAYS.” you quickly bring them back on track. “The Handler is a power hungry bitch, and Harlan is like a golden meal ticket. Or possibly steroids. Either way, she’s desperate for any advantage she can land to…essentially rule the commission with an iron fist. And possibly kill Five and kidnap me. And just so we are all on the same page here…Lila has powers.”

Five scoffs derisively. “Somehow I doubt that.” and you glare at him a little. You’d have thought Five would have learned to start taking your words at face value by now. Continuing with “She’s a mimic. She can mimic anyone’s powers, but can only do one at a time. So watch yourself around her. She won’t go down easy. But I can explain in more detail once we get to the farm. Times a’ wastin and i want this day to be over and done with already.” you really do. You swear the first thing you’re doing once you get back to 2019 is taking the world's longest shower with your fiance.

“I’m in.” Ben’s quiet statement causes every head to turn to him. “You don’t even know what it is, and you’d just do it?” Allison asks.

“Yeah. I mean, why wouldn’t I help my sister?” the way Ben says it makes it sound so obvious, like there was never really any other option. And maybe there wasn’t. At the end of the day, it was Vanya begging her family for help. In any way they possibly could.

Who were they to say no?

“Screw it, I'm in too.” Luther’s declaration leads to a whole round of agreements and you can see Vanya’s eyes light up in happiness.

“Guys, I don't…I don't know what to say.”

You smile over at her. “Just…don’t make the world go boom again, and we’ll consider it even. Alright?”

She lets out a watery laugh. “Alright.”

“So” Klaus starts, pulling on a black cowboy duster, like the ones you see in old western films, “How’d it feel to be numero uno? The head honcho? El presidente de la brellys?”

“Hated it. Hated every minute of it. I honestly don’t know how Luther does it.” you really didn’t. Honestly, you hated having everyone look to you for all the answers. It’ll be nice to be on the same page as everyone else once this whole mess was sorted. Get married, maybe move out to the countryside next door to a lovely amish community, finally look for Klaus’ mother -

Wait. You have to blink hard and shake your head to clear it.

Where the hell did that come from? Amish? Klaus’ mom? Why were those specific thoughts popping into your head now?

You shudder, pulling your jacket tighter around you and follow Klaus and the others out to the car. You don’t really have time to think about that right now. Vanya’s already sitting in the driver's seat, while the others are all still arguing over who goes where. Five just stands next to the passenger side door and nods his head for you to get in.

You smile and move to open the door when you hear a large number of protests “Woah! Hey, why do they get to sit up front?” Diego exclaims. Seriously? Potentially life threatening situation and they’re all arguing about who gets to call shotgun?

“Because children ride in the back.” Five simply states and you have to quickly cover your mouth to keep everyone from seeing you laugh. Quickly getting in and sliding in the middle of the front seat, Five slides in after you and shuts the door. From the rearview mirror, you can see Allison, Klaus, and Diego crawl in, with Klaus swiftly giving the crown of your head a quick peck. From the back you can see Ben pop open the hatch and climb in, with Luther being the last one in. you can feel the weight shift, like you're sitting in a reclined position.

“Anybody makes a fat joke, and I'm leaving.” He threatens. There’s no real heat behind his words though, and you can see Five’s genuine smile of appreciation and just a hint of tenderness (though he’d later deny and even threaten bodily harm should you ever point it out). Vanya starts the car up and you peel out of Elliot’s store for the last time, ready to end this and get back home. Back to 2019.

Back to some semblance of normalcy, if ever there was one…
