#Archovember Day 8 - Geosternbergia sternbergi
Since I did Pterodactylus, I wanted to also include a Pteranodon, as those two pterosaurs seem to be the only ones the average layperson knows about. However, Geosternbergia has a cooler crest, in my opinion, and it’s close enough (it could be considered to either be a species of Pteranodon, or its direct ancestor.)
Geosternbergia was one of the largest pterosaurs. On all fours, an adult male could have stood as tall as a human, and in flight could have had a wingspan of up to 19.7 ft! They were extremely sexually dimorphic, with the males being twice as large as the females, and with bigger crests.

Pteranodon was a pterosaur from the Santonian age of the Late Cretaceous, approximately 86 to 84 million years ago. It is known from many different locations in Kansas, Alabama, Nebraska, Wyoming, and South Dakota. It is also the best known pterosaur, with 1,200 specimens known and described. However, less than half of these specimens are in decent enough condition to inform us about the animal; it is still, however, the best known pterosaur, with many different sizes and varieties of specimen.

Adult Pteranodon have two distinct size classes, the smaller class having rounded head crests and wide pelvic canals that are wider than the larger specimens, which may mean these smaller animals are females and used that canal to lay eggs. The larger size have narrower hips and large crests, probably used for sexual display given their diversity and variation, especially across teh sexes and in juveniles. The average male had a wingspan of 5.6 meters, while females had wingspans of 3.8 meters long, though the largest specimen known from the Niobrara Formation has a wingspan of about 6.25 meters long. They had toothless beaks made of bone that were long, slender, and ending in a sharp point. The upper jaw was curved upwards.

Pteranodon are mainly known from the Niobrara Formation, living in the Western Interior Seaway of North America from that time. It would have lived alongside Nyctosaurus in the skies, but Pteranodon was significantly more common. It lived in offshore rookeries, nesting away from land-based predators and feeding far from the shore, with many fossils found some kilometers from the coastline. Males would compete for association with harems of females, and it probably ate fish, dipping for fish while swimming and then taking off again from the water, reaching depths of 80 cm with their bills and plunge-diving to achieve greater distances like modern seabirds. They had heads, necks, and shoulders as heavily built as modern diving birds, suggesting they folded their wings during the dive like Gannets.

Pteranodon probably flew much like the modern day Albatross given its wingspan. It had a high aspect ratio - aka wingspan to the length from the trailing edge to the leading edge of the wing - like that of the Albatross (9:1 for Pteranodon, 8:1 for the Albatross). Albatrosses spend much of their time sea fishing, soaring and using the wind speed near the ocean surface to travel large distances without flapping and without thermals, aka columns of rising air. While Pteranodon probably flew similar to this, it did occasionally have active and rapid bursts of flapping, as studies of the wing indicate they were capable of such activity. It probably took off from a quadrupedal position, using their long forelimbs for leverage to vault themselves into the air in a rapid leap, with all the energy generated by the forelimbs. Upon clearing the ground, the wing would go on the upstroke, followed by a rapid downstroke to generate more lift and continue launching into the air. On land, they walked quadrupedally.

Pteranodon taxonomy has been a mess, given how early it was originally named; many referred species have been named, but few remain. P. sternbergi are found exclusively in the lower layers of the Niobrara Formation and P. longiceps only in the upper layers, and P. sternbergi only had the upright crest, indicating that this separation of species might be valid, but it is still up for debate, given that they only differ in the shape of the crest and the angle of the skull bones, with the bodies of the animals identical. On the whole, however, members of the Pteranodontid family are very similar in the body shape anyway.
