I write questions for a pub trivia company. We often get requests for theme nights, which means I find myself studying various topics week after week. This isn’t hard - I’m a former journalist and I did graduate level research before the pandemic killed my interest in my (second) field - plus I have the superpower of ADHD on my side.

Unfortunately, I’m also my own manager. Which means I often procrastinate until the last minute to get that kick of adrenaline to force me to get my work done. Otherwise, I will overthink the hell out of any content I write.

Anyway, the whole reason I am posting this is because I got this Tumblr to engage in Leverage content as I rewatch the show. And I can’t help but laugh at Hardison’s commentary while completing his task in the “King George Job” because it is so relatable to my job.

He’s tasked with creating a believable art piece overnight, while every day I’m tasked with cramming on random-ass topics I often know nothing about in order to create a believable game for a customer…. because nothing is worse to a fan taking their time to go to a trivia night than half-assed content.

Most of my conversations with my boss even go, “Do you know how long it took me to research this? I had to dig through X amount of seasons/movies/books/games/Reddits to make this shit in less than 24 hours!”

Mind you, my boss is always like, “Uh, why didn’t you give yourself more time?” but he also gets how my brain functions and doesn’t question it.

I just wonder how many of our customers know their games are written by a person sitting next to at least one dog, with no less than seven browsers open at any given time, who is fueled by caffeine and panic.

Last night I drove out to Long Beach to do pub trivia with Geronimo. It was a special night for him. He had suggested a topic for a round of questions on “Wallpaper.”

So all of the questions during the 4th round had to do with “Wallpaper.”

A real thing that happened in my life

I went to Trivia Night at a local pub with some friends over the weekend. I really like trivia; I don’t like the bar scene, but I love collaborating with friends to try and answer obscure questions over a drink. That said, I’m not a pro by any means. I’m lucky if I can get a few correct answers in a single game. As I result, I am never tasked with writing down answers. But hey, it’s still fun!

Our team was doing pretty so-so, but we were heading into the last round. Now, the last round is where a lot of people make up a ton of points, because it’s a list round. Basically, you’re given a category and have to list off as many things from it as possible (ex. dwarfs from Sleeping Beauty). You only get a short amount of time to answer, but you get one point per correct answer and no penalization for wrong answers. So if one of your team-maters happens to be really knowledgeable about a category, give them the paper and let ‘em go to town.

Thus far, categories had included things like films and video games in the Alien series, and films nominated for Best Picture in the 2016 Oscars. All things I know a bit about, but not a ton.

So at the last Trivia Night, as we began the list round, I joked, “I need a category I am even mildly knowledgeable about. Like electric-type Pokemon.”

First category: Tarot cards. Eh, I’ve seen some Tarot card fan art, I can name a few.

Second category: Psychic-type Pokemon from the first generation.

COMMENCE FREAKOUT

As anyone who knows me knows, I love Pokemon and I especially love psychic-type Pokemon! Like, I was unironically wearing my Pokeball earrings and Mewtwo belt that night. So the answer sheet was immediately shoved at me and I started scribbling. I was so excited I started writing down psychic-types from gen two, haha. I unfortunately ran out of time, but was pretty confident I hadn’t missed much.

In the end, I forgot five Pokemon (Starmie, the Slowpoke line, and the Exeggcute line - darn dual-types). Our team came in second place to the returning champions, and we only lost by five points.

All this to say, if I had remembered every single gen one psychic-type Pokemon, I would have been a gosh-darned hero.

My pub Trivia team keep winning while also being the most unhinged group of lunatics at pub trivia. Winning feels cringe now. I hope some better and even more unhinged freaks come soon and usurp us.
