Today, we wanted to take a moment to look back at the history of presidential debates, beginning with the Douglas-Lincoln Debates prior to the Civil War. This occurred during the growth of the issue of sectionalism in the US between the North and the South as well as the divide over issue of slavery, starting during the election of 1858 for the Illonois Senate. The debates between Douglas and Lincoln garnered national attention, which helped to establish debates as a large part of political campaigns even today.
