Just for fun, I was looking up Pride and Prejudice variation novels (as I've done before – though I've never actually read one, I find the whole concept fascinating), and I found an inventive Christmas one.

The Difference of a Darcy, by Tiffany Thomas – Pride and Prejudice meets It's a Wonderful Life.

Apparently, in Darcy's heartbreak and painful self-realizations after Elizabeth rejects his first proposal, he wishes he was never born. So of course he's transported into a world where he doesn't exist. And somehow, Elizabeth is transported there with him, so as he learns the value of his own life, she learns it too and falls in love with him.

I have no idea if it's well-written or not, and Jane Austen might be rolling over in her grave at such a mash-up, but it's still a creative idea.

Not an official recommendation because I haven’t read it (yet) but I tried a few pages, and story aside it seems fairly well-written? I admit I might be ‘Hooked’, any actual readers are encouraged to comment/reblog with thoughts.

Books for Thoughts: May 7 - Teenage Dirtbag Infamously inspired by Harry Styles, this fanfic turned book is supposedly getting a movie. Really glad I did my research and discovered Harry is NOTHING like Hardin because the guy was a dirtbag at the start. Once I separated the two, I liked the books a lot better (never read the fanfic).

When did fanfic become archaic and something to be ashamed of?

Came across the most bizarre headline on YouTube while looking for SNL clips that has to be ragebait because it can't possibly be real. "Can former fanfiction be good?" I have my own take on the published stories which during the pandemic were a copyright violation, and there were strict rules for published stories that not everyone followed. Not all the original fanfics that became the current Booktok favorites were good quality and some people appeared out of nowhere as celebrities who were not known in the fandom. One of the conditions of a story to be published as original is all traces of the fanfic must be erased from being found online. That only works if you are an unknown to everyone.

But the implication that fanfiction at all, regardless if it is published and sold on Target or only available on Wattpad/Ao3, is "crap writing and embarrassing" is offensive. Who are "they" who call themselves part of the fandom to decide that because they don't see Reylo or Kylo or whoever as valid unless you can buy it as a bound paperback on Amazon. Even published authors agree that fanfiction is better quality than alot of published books. If general you is embarrassed by fanfiction, that's a you problem because it's not going anywhere. Some of the best fanfic will never be published for sale because adapting it would ruin the story. Leave it alone.
