I have had the privilege to go to Punchdrunk's immersive production of Burnt City five times over the past few months, and last night I went to the closing party and it was magical but now I have SO many thoughts on how you would do an immersive Hamlet and it's really not a want it is a need.
I want scenes from the play running at the same time so you follow different pieces of the plot every time you go.
I want scenes that don't happen in the play and montages and just the ability to wander in on Ophelia doing her make up and Hamlet and Horatio sleeping in each others arms and I want a bar area which is just some bar in Denmark but it's where you go to see the ongoing political news in the papers and hear it being discussed by the guy running the cabaret performances and I want loads of small rooms where a handful of people get to see some scenes and then a huge room which is the main hall of a castle.
And I want to find yourself on the pirate ship at one point, or in a small room with Horatio when he gets the letter.
And I want the fleets of Norway as it's own space, camping out on the coast; still, quiet and waiting where you are able to wander through and see all the detail of a military camp with journals and strategic plans and playing cards and all of it.
Also I need a closing party in the same fashion as last night but that creates the alternative universe possibility for Hamlet, Horatio, Ophelia, Laertes, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern just to go clubbing and for everyone in the "audience" to be able to join them.
