There are bullies in every stratum of society. They start in schools then end up in the work place to continue tormenting those who fear “fighting back”. Those who fight back or speak about their experience are often made into villains!! The mass shootings in the USA where people of colour are targeted highlights how easy it is access to guns & ammonution. Most of the perpetrators are white and the media is quick to highlight how they were “bullied”. Had they been black the narrative would be different. Here in BARBADOS we don’t have the issue of guns in school but access to knives, scissors or any sharp objects is easy. We don’t have hate crimes based on race but we do have discrimination based on social class. Bullying in various forms has definitely become the norm. I’ve read comments “everyone is bullied”, ”they will get over it”, “it will build character” etc. This should not be accepted. A lot of people who condone bullying also condone abuse! The hurt parents must feel seeing their child tormented can’t be easy. The psychological scars remain for victims of bullying. We’ve seen lost of life here on this rock due to bullying.
