So a lot of you HHHHHATE Scott Goldsmith, and I don’t blame you!

A lot of you enjoy his character and find his ending satisfying, and I also don’t blame you!

I don’t think he deserved to die, but I came to that opinion before watching Pyro’s POV (who is the main person I feel is talked about in the anti-v!scott discussions. Y’all babyify him a lot, don’t you). Even after finishing his POV, I find it hard to sway my opinion now that I’ve doubled-down on it online, which I realise is a flaw but it’s a flaw most of us have.

I want to be aware of my biases here. I love Smajor in the Life series and his other stuff and I’d never heard of Pyro until vampires. I watched Scott’s POV first for pretty much every episode, and have only been watching Pyro’s in the last week.

I think the fact that everyone’s engaged with the story in a different way actually makes the multiple-POV format of MCYT so interesting to discuss in fandom spaces. This is the first time I’ve really been in a fandom where we didn’t all see the same show in the same way, and it’s fascinating- at least from a writer perspective- how that changes the way we feel about a character.

Don’t get me wrong, Diva’s not perfect, even I can admit that. He’s definitely a villain for most of it, and is still an antagonist by the end. By “hater” I mean someone who is angry at his ending, who doesn’t think he deserved to live without punishment and be given a chance to change.

My defence of Scott Goldsmith under the cut:

I personally can’t bring myself to hate the ending because it feels like it would mean criticising the writing of a creator that I love, for something that was written through roleplay and therefore not planned. It doesn’t seem fair, and while cc!Scott could’ve done what Owen and Pyro did and made more of an effort to give his villain character a satisfying ending, I gotta respect that he made the choices he made.

“Scott is fully evil and therefore must die” kind of goes against the moral of vampires in my opinion- that nobody is fully good or fully evil and morality isn’t black and white (which is, admittedly, the message I got from his POV, but I think it applies to most of the others as well). I feel like making a blanket statement on “he’s done bad things and so must die” is kinda ignoring all the depth and nuance of his character.

Also. (And I know this is a low blow). Sometimes bad people get to live. Look around you. I don’t want to be the one to bring up realism in the minecraft vampire roleplay fandom, but if everyone in life got the ending they deserved then the political climate would be a lot different than it is right now. Just saying.

Anyway, my main point, as made above, is that there is no unbiased way to consume media. What’s rare about vsmp is that the biases are more dependent on the fandom than the creator. Not fully, though- as many people have pointed out, the cc!s do edit their videos in a certain way to comply with their character’s views of the world. I make my defence of v!Scott fully aware that my opinion is formed by my love of cc!Scott and the fact that I saw his perspective before anyone else’s. But I also think that when I see people attack his character they might be coming from a similar place with their favourite creator.

Like the characters in vsmp, nobody’s right or wrong in this discussion. Everyone has their reasons for their worldview and motivations for saying and doing the things that they do. Everyone’s the protagonist in their own story. The situations are all so nuanced and complicated and I don’t think it can really be boiled down to “he deserved it” or “he didn’t deserve it”

I’m happy for the poll to prove me wrong, but if my theory is correct, I might bring up these results in future v!scott discourse (and feel free to do the same!). But I might also decide to not engage with it further now that I’ve said my piece. I guess it could depend on if watching Apo’s POV changes my opinion on him, as she’s next on my itinerary.
