Through my library I found I can listen to the Tertiary and Quandary Phases of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Unfortunately it's not the original 1978 ones the books were based on, but they are more recent adaptations of Books 3 and 4. So...I might really have to check them out.

Last episode of the Quandary Phase...

Good God, it's Ford Prefect being annoying! Only he's a lot less annoying here than he was in the book. Still think it's incredibly rude of him to have greeted Fenchurch with "Where's the gin?," though. Things are nicely tying into each other. "She's got a kid..." "With who?" "Oh, Zaphod, probably." And apparently Tricia McMillan is on this alternate version of Earth instead of a completely different one... And Zaphod is trying to find Zarniwoop? Oh my God. This only means one thing- the Big Z is back for Mostly Harmless, baybee! Why the hell would Ford call Arthur's Earth home phone to make sure he had found out that Earth had been reinstated. I mean... what ifArthur hadn't found out? (Well, he would have met him at the bar, no mystery there...) Cell phones from the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation, with special ringtones! SHARE AND ENJOY! Really, really digging this whole parallel dimension Earths thing. Also, that scene towards the end with Ford and Arthur having a beer together is so much better than their last scene in the actual book, and leaves things on a warm note between them (Arthur is prone to getting exasperated with Ford, but he can at least tolerate him to a certain point). Love that Arthur is willing to tell Ford all he knows about girl's chess. The goofy bastard. Oh dear. Poor Marvin. Poor, poor Marvin. "We apologize for the inconvenience" and "Miserable old git. I'll miss him." ...Fenchurch and Arthur were going to Allosimanctious Syneca. Okay. Now I'm sad. Especially because Arthur sounded so heartbroken after she poofed away. FOR THE LAST DAMN TIME, STOP. SHIPPING. ARTHUR. AND. TRILLIAN. Come on, they didn't even have that kid out of love... So, next stop- Quintessential Phase. Although I think I might watch episode one of the TV series instead because it's that kind of night.

Wow, Fit the Twenty-First was a real... roller coaster of emotions, shall we say. I mean, first Arthur and Fenchurch are being cute together in the park and Arthur tells his funny biscuit story (which was actually a thing that happened to Douglas Adams, so that makes it even better). But then... then the Vogons are at a meeting discussing how to get rid of the Earth once and for all and talking about Plural zones and everything and I flashed back to the ending of Mostly Harmless and started wondering if the Vogons had engineered that whole thing with the lost spacecraft monitoring and then obliterating Earth on purpose, because even if the construction job was being completed in a different universe it was still their universe where the Vogons took over the Guide headquarters and I don't know, I have this theory where everything makes sense in some interconnected way. But anyway, I started getting really sad thinking about the ending of Mostly Harmless (which never made me sad before, but whatever) and it got so that I couldn't even laugh at the joke about shooting whoever coughed and the Guide entry about the dragons. But my mood changed rapidly in the next scene, for that Dire Straits song was very nice, smooth, sexy and sultry... and though my favorite Arthur line from the book wasn't in the scene ("perhaps you can do what I can do"), it's replacement was just as sweet ("What are you standing on?" "NOTHING!") and Arthur's comment about "you must be an inch taller than you were before the dolphins left" was a welcome and humorous addition. In the book I loved the aerial sex scene, so it's kind of a shame they had to tone it down for the radio and just have them fly happily through the air (although that was adorable) and just mention that the old woman saw them making love on the plane's wing... and no, I'm not saying that we should have heard them going at it, but that it was a different scene from how I imagined. Well, Arthur being "sexy" was never really believable to me anyway... ...but his relationship with Fenchurch is cute and listening to the Quandary Phase only makes me like her more as a character. I acknowledge that she's not a very well-developed character and her only purpose seems to be to love Arthur and make him happy, but I guess it's kind of justified in that it's implied the universe/fate brought them together. And boy, does Arthur deserve to be happy. Wonko the Sane has a weirdly calming voice, and I've warmed up to Fenchurch's adorable accent. Also, the bit at the end about "Will Ford Prefect arrive to confuse and annoy everyone?" meets with a resounding yet apprehensive YES from me. God, I'm almost dreading his appearance in the last episode. Last thoughts- loved Ford's dream as it was presented here, can't believe how short this phase was, WHY WERE THEY STILL SHIPPING ARTHUR AND TRILLIAN THAT JOKE ISN'T FUNNY ESPECIALLY IF YOU'VE SEEN THE MOVIE, and Arthur's friend Murray was sufficiently funny.

I'm watching TV right now but also have to say- Quandary Phase's voice acting is a little weird. Fenchurch's accent sounds off, but I guess I can get used to it... and I realized I've been listening to the radio series for so long now that David Dixon (who played a bit part in this one episode) no longer sounds like Ford Prefect to me. Geofferey McGivern does. Also I don't really like the pacing, but then again, I don't really like the book itself. There were too many ideas rolled into one.

Tonight: Quandary Phase is a go.

Already I can tell that it's not going to be as good as the Tertiary Phase- too much Guide narrative and an adaptation of my least favorite Hitchhiker's novel, for two reasons. But I'm really excited for Fenchurch, so I think I can deal with it. Two thoughts (well, maybe more than two)- Arthur claimed he was going to meet a friend in some bar before he realized the Earth had been reinstated. Does that mean Ford wAs waiting for him in the bar and was buying everyone drinks to pass the time, or was he referring to somewhere on Krikkit (probably not the latter)? And a question was posed in the closing narration- what could be more important to Ford than dancing with girls and drinking a lot? Sure, he was probably just curious as to what was going on, butI can't help but think it probably had something to do with Arthur. One last thought- that music they played when Ford was hijacking a helicopter at the end of the program was EPIC and they better play it again in the Quintessential Phase when Ford jumps out the window of the Guide headquarters. Too bad he's an apathetic jerk in his next appearance in this storyline... Ford in the beginning is undeniably a badass.
