Through my library I found I can listen to the Tertiary and Quandary Phases of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Unfortunately it's not the original 1978 ones the books were based on, but they are more recent adaptations of Books 3 and 4. So...I might really have to check them out.

I know there's no point in re-listening to the second season of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (season 3 begins where season 1 ended, ignoring literally everything that happened inbetween), but it's worth it just to hear about the Shoe Event Horizon again.

I just finished listening to the Tertiary Phase of H2G2 and... why were they shipping Arthur and Trillian towards the end there? They left out the joke about "He made me realize where my affections lay... unfortunately Zaphod is too frightened by all this..." and just had Trillian say that Arthur stopped her from running off with a Thunder God. It was so weirdly romantic (Arthur called her "Tricia" and everything). Maybe I'm just too sensitive to this because I love Z and T together. The last scene was gripping, anyway, and Trillian did so great with the negotiations on Krikkit... if only she could have stayed that cool! Also, I forgot to mention it, but while DNA voicing Agrajag was funny and awesome, I also got weirdly sad when Arthur killed him (AGAIN). It just felt too real, I guess.

So I've been listening to the Tertiary Phase and a few things stick out to me:

Although it features most of the original cast (with the exceptions of the late Richard Vernon {Slartibartfast}, Peter Jones {The Book}, and David Tate {Eddie}), it's definitely got a different feel to it.

The thing that really throws me is William Franklyn as the Book.  It's not that he's bad, it's just that he's not Peter Jones!

There's a lot more swearing than usual.  I was surprised to hear Ford say "belgium" (pardon my language) within the first 15 minutes!  Not to mention the frequent sprinkles of the various forms of "zark" and, my personal favorite, "zarking fardwarks."  Not that I don't enjoy a good swear, but I liked it better when they were scattered in times of crisis.

Simon Jones's performance seems really over-the-top this time around.

The music is really...odd.  The Primary and Secondary phases relied on state-of-the-art sound effects and voice-work to convey mood, while this phase feeds us the mood with cheap-sounding music.  I don't like it.

It just seems like Douglas Adams's stories and humor need to be supervised by the man himself to make sure they're done right.  Unfortunately, this phase and the last of the radio series was made after his death, and it's just not the same.  Despite these things, I'm still (obviously) enjoying it immensely and I love hearing Geoffrey McGivern as Ford again.
