Fanart Friday brought to you this week by my compulsive rereading of the 1st Amethyst series! And my need to draw more silly stuff. Characters, from right to left: Quarr, a dragon-slaying, shirtless, principled revolutionary trying to create representative government in the hereditary mageocracy of the Gemworld, The Diamond Priest, mystic-powered badass pacifist, Prince Garnet, dimension-bending god-punching scholar-warrior who walked into the realm of actual death itself to save his world, and unlike SOME heroes actually chose to stay there and keep looking out for everyone.

aaaand Prince Topaz, who...uh...looks good in a billowy shirt. Boldly demonstrating the Love Interest can be just as silly and useless when the genders are reversed. In his first scene he is *actually talking to birds*. He's a Disney Love Interest in a world of massive warfare, and it is hilarious.  All the narrative heavy lifting on the Gemworld is done by people who were demoted to sidekick in traditional supers comics.  Women, non-European lookin' dudes (in a FANTASY story! Shock!), old people, children...Gemworld did not have a target audience of 16-35 year old white males, and it was AWESOME.  And it didn't dwell on it, which was even awesome...er, given how hamfisted most such attempts at breaking out of the demographic stable were in the 1980s. I don't know if it was a purposeful drive on the writer's part, or just a side effect of writing a good story, but dang, it sure is refreshing.
