Music and platforming, together they make a excellent game. Sound Shapes has you progress trough platforming level, but you make music as you go along. it's simply wonderful. it also features music from artists like Beck and Deadmau5.
The games main path is just simply fun. It's a musical experience that should be had. I never messed with level creation much, but if that's your thing it has one. And there challenges hat can get pretty tough to beat.
Buy Sounds Shapes and play it, its a wonderful time to be had. A musical platforming adventure, a simply fantastic combination.
If you have an different opinion or see an error feel free to say so.
Review Time!: Sound Shapes
About a month ago, I came across this lovely gem on sale on PSN. Between hearing the wonderful things about it and knowing it has an MSRP of $14.99, I couldn't help to pick it up for the four dollar price tag to see what it's all about. And let me tell you, it deserves all the love that it's getting.
Sound Shapes, if you haven't quite heard of it, is a music oriented 2D platformer. You play as a cute little blob, collecting circles as you try to make your way through the level. When snagged, each circle adds a little something to the tune that's playing. It could be anything from a soft hi-hat to a few plucks on a banjo, or even a sweet resounding chord. You don't necessarily have to get all of these collectibles in order to complete the level, but it definitely helps create the full picture.
And this is a game where anyone can practically jump in and try it out, given the two button control layout. While the controls are easy to master, the concept of this beaut of a game is just as simple. Just don't hit the red stuff! Do that, and your blob will be just fine. And did I mention your blob naturally sticks to a good number of things? Well, it surely comes in handy. You'll be traversing the levels in style as you hang from ceilings and hang on to rotating objects as you're making your way while chilling out to some awesome tunes from I am Robot and Proud, Beck, Deadmau5, and more.
Let me tell you...these songs are undeniably awesome. They all have an electronic style, but you seriously cannot help to bob along to it. And there's things like in Beck's album, wherein the lyrics are incorporated with the level, making platforms change as the words are sung. Or objects that travel with the bass line. Even the wrecking ball in the picture below pulsated with the tempo of the song, and the whole level just lived in the music. I couldn't help but love it.
I also just have to mention the way the level select is set up. On the menu, you can pick albums. Each record album is performed by a different artist and can include from three to six songs. Might I add that each record has a unique art style, differentiating itself from the rest of the game. It makes for a nice change of pace, and really sets the mood as the music is sewn into its separate worlds. So when you've chosen what you want to play, you play the album in order. Each song is a level, and progressing puts the needle closer to the center. It's a simple, yet brilliant touch.
The main campaign is only about five records long, including twenty tracks all together. However, you can download more albums and tracks in the Sound Shapes store for free! While there are many user created levels, there are also more albums by the developer, Queasy Games, as well as an album by the Ghostly International label.
As you might have guessed since there's user created content, you yourself can create levels too. Completing a level unlocks a good number of obstacles and items from it, and you can combine them in your own way while placing the collectible circles where you want in order to make your own beat. This is an unbeatable feature, as it feeds the creativeness for whoever is hungry for it. Finishing the campaign also unlocks two more different modes of play, providing even more replay value. Death mode is extremely challenging, so play at your own risk.
In the end, Sound Shapes is an undoubted win. Its wide array of elegant art styles cooperating with their own captivating melodies is no match for the everyday platformer. Even if the campaign is a tad short, the game makes up for it in other parts. Also, it's an ease to hop into, without question. I'd definitely pick this title up if I were you.

NAME: Sound Shapes x Beck
AUTHOR: Queasy Games, an indie game studio based in Toronto created by Jonathan Mak. The visualization of the three Beck’s songs have been created by the animation studio, Pyramid Attack, also from Toronto.
LOCATION: The game will finally be released on August 7th on the Playstation Network for $14.99. It’s a cross-play title so if you get it for the PS Vita, you’ll be able to get it for the PS3 for free and vice versa.
DESCRIPTION: The musical platform game Sound Shapes was presented at the E3 last year and many of you have anxiously awaited its release since then. It’s finally coming and we’ve just learned that three songs of Beck’s latest album (Cities, Touch The People, and Spiral Staircase) have been turned into three different levels of the game. Like you needed more reasons to be excited…
AMUSEMENT RATE: “Sound Shapes” looked good on its own but over the past year many musicians (Deadmau5, Jim Guthrie, I AM ROBOT AND PROUD) joined the Queasy Games project to make it even more interesting. The interactive music videos of Beck’s songs are a great addition and the artwork made by Pyramid Attack perfectly translates the atmosphere of each song. What’s even better is to know that each player will be able to create their own level thanks to built-in level creation tools. The music industry might not be dead after all! thumbs up to Queasy Games, it’s also always nice to see indie developers getting the attention they deserve on platforms such as the PS Vita and PS3.
Very cool. Check it out.
