It’s finally out! Here’s my first artwork for Mermay, tied to a mermaid AU I’ve been working on, starring a powerful girl group.

The group is composed of Rosetta a.k.a Rose (my trollsona & lead singer), Poppy (rhythm guitarist), Barb (lead guitarist), Carol (bassist), DJ Suki (DJ & keyboardist), Jussy (@jade-green-butterfly’s OC & keytarist), and Poppy’s twin, Viva (drummer). These mermaids hail from the submerged underwater kingdom of Mu, where seven pods rule the North Pacific Ocean. Each pod is governed by a king or queen:

The Coralseer Pod — King Quincy and Queen Essence

The Hearthdeep Pod — King Trollex

The Thalassic Pod — King Trollzart

The Kelpine Pod — Queen Delta Dawn

The Aquaryn Pod — Queen Celestia

Rose’s grandma, Queen Celestia serves as the High Queen of Mu, acting as its sovereign ruler so Rosetta is the Crown Princess of Mu, while Poppy and Barb are crown princesses of their respective pods.

From the North Pacific Ocean to Vinyl City, California, these girls—and their wide circle of merfriends (including Branch, the Snack Pack, and others)—have been chosen to carry on an ancient mission. For generations, their species—the tritons—alongside six other sworn protector races (the krakens, gillmen, finfolk, sea warriors, oceanids, and nereids), have defended both ocean and surface realms from threats such as dark magic users, Nerissa and her twisted mermaid-like muliceto, and the monstrous brineades (aka false sirens), whom the tritons despise for their cannibalistic ferality. Their sea creature friends included Oscar, Angie, Lenny, Ernie & Bernie from Shark Tale.

Together, the group—Dreamwave—lives a double life as both chart-topping idols and warrior mermaids under the tutelage of mentorship of Tatiana Quartz, the leader and CEO of No Straight Roads and a former guitarist of the Goolings (her band members died fighting against the forces of evil, leaving her the sole survivor).

When they’re not selling out stadiums or topping the Billboard charts, they moonlight as protectors, defending their fans from supernatural dangers lurking beneath the ocean’s depths. Their instruments, gifted to them on their hatchdays (birthdays), transform into magical weapons. Combined with their powers, musical mastery, and voices strong enough to purify or destroy evil, they are a force to be reckoned with.

Princess Rosetta (Aquaryn Pod), a veiltail betta mermaid, wields sonokinesis (sound manipulation) derived from her chromesthesia; her microphone transforms into a wand.

Princess Poppy (Oceania Pod), a strawberry peacock cichlid mermaid, possesses underwater chlorokinesis (manipulation of aquatic plant life); her cowbell and stick becomes a scepter-like wand.

Princess Barb (Nanaue Pod), a great white shark mermaid (and proudly lesbian), uses opsíanokinesis (obsidian manipulation); her guitar becomes a double-bladed axe.

Carol, an orca mermaid, controls sand through psammokinesis; her bass transforms into a sword.

DJ Suki, a giant pacific octopus cecaelia (a subspecies of tritons but with octopus or squid lower halves), has melanokinesis—ink-based powers that vary by color—and her turntable discs become a pair of tessen fans.

Jussy, a butterfly koi mermaid and Cooper’s girlfriend, wields pearl-based magic; her keytar shapeshifts into an energy bow.

Viva, a strawberry peacock cichlid mermaid, uses starfish-based magic; her drum set and sticks combine into a war hammer.

Now… fair warning—this mermaid AU gets filthy 😈

I drew inspiration not only from classic mermaid media, K-pop Demon Hunters, and magical girl shows, but also from Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt—and let’s just say, that influence shows. Barb, who is a lesbian, channels Panty’s shameless, lusty energy and gets very promiscuous with her girlfriend Viva, while Carol carries a Stocking-like vibe. Rose has a Rumi-like presence, Poppy leans toward Zoey, and Viva shares traits with Mira.

So yeah… there’s a whole lot of chaos, attitude, and unapologetic filth swirling beneath these waves.

With her mother and grandparents doing their best to keep Equus from falling apart, Cherish stood alone. She ached as years past without Ludustella nearby, but in her heart of hearts, she knew her sibling was still out there. Time had made Cherish regret ever being embarrassed by Ludustella, and decided that she couldn't continue without letting her sibling know she cared. So she left went to search for the draconequus.

Cherish was never a fan of being tricked by the changelings in their mischievous days, so avoided them in the past. Knowing that they might be the only clue she had to finding her sibling, she decided to put her preconceptions aside and seek them out, in case Ludustella was hiding among them.

Unfortunately, the first ones she found had been twisted by Phoboira. Sensing her love energy the changelings attacked her, sucking all the love they could get with an endless hunger. Not having a violent bone in her body, Cherish couldn't bring herself to fight back, wondering if she deserved it.

When Cherish started to wonder if she's going to loose her physical form when other changelings arrived. Weak with hunger- but still whole- the changelings that refused Phoboira attacked their corrupted brethren. The idea that these creatures would still help her gave Cherish more power, and her affection -not forcibly taken- gave them the power to drive the corrupted Changelings off.

Sadly, these Changelings had also been searching for Ludustella, and could not tell Cherish where she was either. They offered to help Cherish search for their creator, but the alicorn knew if they came with her they would be a target for draconequi. Some had already been drawn into the war- she didn't want Ludustella's "children" in harm's way.

But Cherish could tell that these changelings were struggling without love energy. Since she had to travel if there was any hope of finding her sibling, she decided to imprint her own abilities unto them. She gave them the power to absorb ambient energy around them. The appreciation of water from a thirsty animal. The enjoyment of the sun during a windy day. Where there was nature, there was love that was projected into it.

These changelings- who became the royals of this tribe- could redistribute this energy into the other changelings as love energy. But most importantly, as long as they kept loving each other they wouldn't go hungry. In the meantime, she encouraged them to stay hidden. The world was dangerous, and she knew Ludustella would be sad if they didn't survive. While they might not be safe without Ludustella's protection, Cherish promised she wouldn't stop searching.

In their gratitude, the changelings gave Cherish a large crystal shaped like a heart they found in their caves. Legend says that heart stayed with the alicorn for most of her search.

Third chapter done, this was, by far, the most difficult one yet; King of Words is the hardest character to write from all the other that I did, not from this story alone, from any other text that I did! I need some rest because he gives me headaches.
