Lady Jane Grey’s life and the circumstances of her death were due to things out of her control. Unfortunately, she was the cousin of King Edward VI. He was a sickly young king who came to power at 9 years old. He had a council who ruled for him and the leader was the Duke of Northumberland. Jane was married to the Duke’s son Guilford. In a plot more than likely devised by the Duke, King Edward passed over both his sisters Mary I and Elizabeth I, and named the young Jane as his heir upon his death. When he died at the age of 15 Jane and her husband were forced to take the crown. Jane didn’t want the crown and was said to have fainted when she heard the news that she would be queen. England didn’t want Jane as their queen, most people didn’t even know who she was. After just 9 days on the throne, Mary I was declared by her supporters as queen, and Jane and Guilford were arrested and taken to the Tower of London. Although the crown was forced on them, Jane and Guilford were found guilty of treason for excepting it. Mary didn’t want to execute her cousin but knew it was politically dangerous to keep her alive. The Catholic Mary feared that the protestant people of England would rally behind Jane who was a devout protestant and overthrow her. In a last-ditch effort, she sent a priest to Jane’s prison cell to convert her but Jane refused, stating “it is not my desire to prolong my days.” Jane and her husband were executed on February 11th, 1554, she was 16 years old. So what was Jane’s sin? It wasn’t her fault that King Edward named her his heir. Nor was it her fault that her father-in-law wanted to use in her schemes. She did nothing wrong and for that, she was executed. #history #worldhistory #tudorhistory #ladyjanegrey #queensofengland #englishhistory #queens #historynerd #historynerds #beheaded #historic #womeninhistory #royalty https://www.instagram.com/p/CfogDTNu6f-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
