one of my students today walked up to me like “hey mx. j” and held up their ipad that just had the nonbinary flag next to an image of wario’s color pallet and yes hello I've called to report a hate crime

teaching personal narratives, i   -  freeze  - i always lied.  and now looking out at 26 students, i want to be that one, honest,  real teacher i needed.  but -      the community -      their parents -      my coworkers - she said, as teachers, we should be honest, but not too honest because families like mine - it’s bound to cause problems.

for five years i taught educators about the importance of including queer families and now - i hide my own family in vague words and half-truths. what does this make me? what is cowardice? what is fear?  what is being reasonable and just doing my job?  what is the  Right Thing?
