it is exactly for the reason that the gesture leaves him perplexed ( the tech repair is incidental in comparison to the extravagant display accompanying it ) that he finds it so familiarly endearing. there is NO reason for joel to have gone through the extra step of obtaining a stuffed animal and a single piece of chocolate beyond the expression of an unpredictable, childish, and good-willed soul. at least one of those traits elijah values highly, and the other two are simply elegant, tolerable packaging around a necessary component. very much in parallel to the presentation he’s now dissecting for the component promised.

impatient as ever. elijah has never minded WAITING in the moment for the good of the long term. whereas joel saw it fit to expedite the recovery of their process, elijah sees it as equal measure progress and hindrance. they can move forward, now, it’s true, but if they two alone were capable of organizing and running this entire business alone, they never would have assembled others. inferior to the pair in most ways, but still exceptional by humanity’s standards. not that those are tightly-strung, these days.

taking the learning experience from the ‘newbs’ will just leave them just as helpless in future endeavors. and the ones which succumb to pressure and their own minds? well– THAT is simply the natural selection of the business industry. why should he want someone so unreliable around, anyway?

but he spares joel no lecture; those insights are not HIS burden. elijah alone, at the top, is responsible for making sure all of his employees are properly trained, challenged, and encouraged. and it is most certainly in this particular employee’s notoriety to accomplish that which he is able. and even, elijah ventures further in his silent accusations, to do so with little thought of the ripple effect of his actions. or, perhaps, a lack of concern towards them. after all, it really hasn’t HARMED anyone. but a lesson in patience might still do the overzealous man some good.

after a moment of consideration, he pulls his phone from his pocket and sends joel a text.

he then promptly collects the component and retreats to his home laboratory. to, of course, examine joel’s work.
