ah ahaaa. aha. what a delicious question.
A good summation is thus: the organization took interest in an exceptionally gifted child, and took their chances despite his being a high profile target when the right opportunity arose. Then they broke down his sense of identity and built him up as a loyal agent of the syndicate.
He didn’t so much “join” as he did get plucked away from what would have been his normal life and shaped to fill the mold they wanted him to fill.
