U.S. Startup Plans to Launch Climate-Friendly Window Heat Pump, With Eye on R290

[...]  The charge limit for R290 in air conditioners or heat pumps in the U.S., set by the UL 60335-2-40 standard, is three times the LFL (lower flammability limit), or about 114g. That is less than what is stipulated in the global standard, IEC 60335-2-40, which allows about 1kg  of R290  in indoor appliances in a very large room. A revised version of IEC standard is expected later this year or early 2022.

‘Excellent’ refrigerant for refrigeration and air conditioning: R290

...  He also gave his audience an update on the implementation of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)’s 60335-2-89 standard, adopted earlier this year. The 2-89 standard increased the maximum charge limit for flammable refrigerants in sealed systems to 13 times the lower flammability limit (LFL), but no more than 1.2kg (about 2.64lbs) in total. For R290 the new standard means a maximum charge of 494g (about 17.42oz) per circuit.

R290 Merchandisers:The big picture

… The microDS merchandisers are charged with a tiny amount of R-290 – up to just 150 grams (5.3 oz) per circuit – which adheres to UL and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) safety standards for commercial refrigerators and freezers.

… Incidentally, the IEC voted May 8, 2019, to increase the R290 charge limit to 500 grams, which eventually may allow for a wider adoption in the U.S. across more types of commercial refrigeration equipment.

… A possible charge limit increase in the future by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) of 150 to 300, or possibly even 500 grams per circuit, might also help propane R290 gain even wider attention as a viable, full-store solution, one that would dramatically increase the use of natural refrigerants and help the EPA achieve its goal of reducing – if not eliminate -- the use of HFCs.
