A Wonderful Life

A short one-shot featuring a now-uncursed Killian, Alice, and Robin as they prepare for Christmas on his houseboat. Yeah, I’m on board with the headcanon that cursed Killian had a houseboat in Seattle. Part of the now super behind 25 Days of Wish Hook. 

“I don’t understand why you don’t let me use the stove.”

“Because the last two times I did, you set the kitchen on fire, love.”

Robin sat back as she watched father and daughter bicker, the sounds of It’s a Wonderful Life providing a comforting background noise.

“I was thirteen the last time I set it on fire!” protested Alice, her nose wrinkling in that little rabbit way she had, faint lines crinkling between her eyes. Robin loved those little bunny lines. They were just so Alice.

“You were thirteen last time I caught you,” replied Killian, his complementary crow’s feet decorating his eyes. “Besides, wouldn’t you rather mash the potatoes? Or, perhaps more accurately, pummel them to all hell.”

A mischievous glint passed over Alice, and Robin knew he’d won. She took a deep breath, letting all the sounds and smells around them wash over her. Water lapped rhythmically around Killian’s houseboat while George Bailey danced the Charleston on TV. Warm bread, nutmeg-scented sweet potato casserole, and a glazed ham sat on the table, tantalizing her senses. Home, she realized. It all just felt so much like home.

Since the curse had broken, no place quite had that feel to it as much as the houseboat with the three of them sharing stories of impossible things and partaking of marmalade sandwiches. Robin missed the Enchanted Forest and the farmhouse she had shared with her mother, but there was something special about here and now.

And, here and now was filled with Christmas with her true love and the man she had grown to see as a father figure of sorts, who so readily had accepted her as part of his family. Who had battled alongside her aunt and mother, who had sacrificed so much of his happiness for the sake of Alice, Henry, everyone.

“Robin?” She shook herself from her daydream and glanced up to Killian. “You alright, love?”

“Of course. Just thinking,” she said, then looked to Alice who was busy giving the potatoes hell. “I found something the other day and, I know presents are a tomorrow morning thing, but I want to give you both a gift now.”

Killian opened his mouth to protest, but was beat to the punch by an enthusiastic, “I love presents!”

Robin chuckled, rising from her seat to give Alice a kiss, Killian looking briefly at the boiling pots to give them some privacy. She then reached into her satchel and pulled out two small, carefully wrapped packages and handed one to each of them.

“I know it’s… I mean… well, here,” she stammered.

Alice and Killian held the matching gifts, both moving to stand in front of Robin. They reminded her so much of each other. Their eyes, their ears, their mannerisms. Even now, they both leaned forward to kiss her on each cheek, Alice going a step further and pulling her into a hug.

“You haven’t even seen what it is yet,” she said with a watery giggle.

“Whatever it is, thank you,” said Killian.

Then, together, father and daughter tore into the paper and opened their respective boxes, revealing matching white elephant figurines. “In case you ever needed to find each other again. I… I bought myself one, too. So you could also find me.”

This time it was Killian that pulled her into a hug, allowing her to rest her head for a moment on his shoulder as he kissed her blond hair. “Thank you. So much.”

Before she knew what was happening, she felt Alice tear her into her own arms, almost crushing her in her renewed embrace. “I love you,” her light voice rang, sending a thrill up Robin’s spine.

“I love you, too,” she whispered back.

Killian watched his girls, feeling a warmth that came from so much more than the boiling pots nearby. The TV nearby hummed, and he heard George Bailey’s voice break through the blissful white noise around him.

“What is it you want, Mary? What do you want? You want the moon? Just say the word and I'll throw a lasso around it and pull it down. Hey. That's a pretty good idea. I'll give you the moon, Mary.”

He took in the words as the girls pulled away from each other, their faces glowing with unbridled affection. These girls had brought him so much hope and happiness after so much suffering and sacrifice. If either of them asked, he’d give them the moon.

Robin and Alice settled back into their chairs, Alice continuing her punishment of the potatoes and Robin in her peaceful observations. She shared one more look with Killian, a smile brushing their lips. The same thought threaded through them to the tune of Alice’s pounding. Here and now, it was nothing they ever would have expected back home, but it was a wonderful life.

(Captain) Curious Archer Headcanons

I’m going to call them that for the moment until we seem to collectively decide a name, but for now I couldn’t help but just think about this trio and how much I already love them. Headcanons below and, as ever, I’d love to read your own!

They have an insane amount of wanderlust, both from their normal lives and their cursed personas. They’ve realm-hopped together and between that and the semi-nomad life Tilly seems to have and the backpacking-through-Europe-and-staying-in-hostels life cursed!Robin seems to have going for her, they can barely sit still. Killian thought he was bad when it came to moving around too much, but hot damn these girls have him beat. It takes all his power to get them to just sit down for a minute for a healthy meal before they’re running off somewhere else.  

Yes, I headcanon that, eventually, Killian unofficially adopts Robin since she’s the first person that ever made Alice feel like a normal person and really saw her for who she was. He feels completely indebted to her for making his Alice feel so comfortable and loved after she felt lonely for so long. She has taken to seeing him as a father figure because, hey, he’s going to be her father-in-law eventually and she never knew her own. It’s not something that they really speak about or make a big fuss over. It just happened organically. Fight me.

Alice is definitely the more impulsive one—the emotional, passionate, fly-by-the-seat-of-her-pants one. Robin finds it endearing most of the time, though does try to balance her out by reminding her of reality and boundaries. She doesn’t blame Alice. In fact, she completely understands that, with the unconventional way she grew up, it’s wonderful for her true love to feel so free. Robin just wants to be sure she remains safe and is happy to be there to provide some extra security.

They may or may not have played William Tell once. Killian nearly dropped dead, then nearly killed them both. It’s more for his poor heart than their own lives that they decided it best to put that game on hold, even if they do maintain Robin never misses her target and Alice is perfectly capable of standing still for at least a minute. Okay, thirty seconds. 

With Robin’s help, Killian can sometimes get Alice to eat something other than marmalade sandwiches. Alice doesn’t tell them she’d willingly take whatever they’d give her—it’s too much fun to watch them get a little frazzled. 

Robin will make scavenger hunts or find “choose your own adventure” books for Alice. Alice will get books on ornithology and various other non-fiction that she believes Robin can put to good use, and also tries new ways to test out her tracking skills. These often descend into frantic games of Hide-and-Seek with the two of them laughing like hyenas by the end of it.

When she’s no longer able to be around her father thanks to his poisoned heart, the chess board in her tower starts to look more like a mocking reminder than a comfort. Until she meets Robin, that is. They don’t get off to the best start, but Robin recognizes a sense of loss in her that she’s felt all her life. Eventually she notices the chess board and asks of Alice can teach her how to play.
