The vibe of this one is very aromantic. It's also asexual of course. It's a charged fight scene that isn't charged with anything sexual or romantic. But something distinctly queer is going on. I had so much fun writing this. It's after episode 5 but there's not really spoilers for those who haven't watched the show.

Rabbit would probably not pick up on the fact that Toad is also asexual because he thinks they're so different, he doesn't think to compare their shared experience, he doesn't want to.

I'm still thinking about Kyle Prue saying "Very intimate to kill another person. You're the most important person in that man's life at that point."

Toad is actually depressed and suicidal. Initially, I thought of it as just my headcanon, but Toad's detachment from the world colors his entire worldview and gets concerning.

"Does that make a difference? Either way I'm never gonna see her again."

"This is how I wanna die... I wanna go as a stepping stone to this prick's realization that he's a much worse person than he thinks he is."

"There are two sides of the law and we're both on the morally bankrupt side."

Toad's immorality is marked by an apathy. Who cares? What's the difference? What's the difference between one broken leg and two? Whatever he says, no one's gonna believe. Either way Rabbit's gonna survive.

I think Toad kinda sees Rabbit as immortal. Maybe he wouldn't word it that way, but he believes Rabbit when Rabbit says he's going to keep going, talks about enduring, tenacity. I think it's tenacity vs apathy, defeatism, indifference, that is the core of Rabbit and Toad's conflict;

"I know I'm a degenerate, why don't you?" "I'm a recovering addict. I have to believe that all people can overcome." Etc

Toad just can't relate to that level of persistence. He can only understand it as non human. Which isn't totally on him, Rabbit is disconnected from humans in a very Extraordinary Machine coded way. But you saw the Christmas special, that will not hold up post stabbing.

This drabble was a lot of fun. I love using romantic aesthetics in an aromantic way. I tagged Aromantic Toad and Aromantic Asexual Toad, but you could also probably read him as lithromantic in this if you want to.

I thought I had more to say here but I can't think of anything else and yapped plenty in the end notes.

If you haven't watched Rabbit yet, get in on the ground floor, because Toad is the first character ever that I've felt so certain will become a canon aspec character. I didn't expect Rabbit to be ace, and fool me once, I know Toad's asexual too.

Refusing to fake date Bobby, the divorce, the ace of spades, being Rabbit's darker half, making me realize I'm aroace.

The more certain I become of his aro/ace identity the more sure I am we're getting canon ace4ace enemies to lovers/alterous attraction/qpr.

I don't wanna put all my eggs in one basket. Rabbit's already canonically ace, I'll be happy even if it's just him. But I mean there's respectfully no fucking way Toad isn't getting a redemption arc. So why not make him aspec and in a qpr with Rabbit and Natalie.

Kyle Prue said in relation to Rabbit S2 that people can only ask for what they've seen before, and please keep that in mind as we talk about the future of Rabbit, when i talk about what could happen, it's mostly just fun to imagine.

But Toad coming out as aspec, going on this arc, would be something that i haven't seen before, that, yeah, I'm asking for. This would be a huge win for representation, and no one would see it coming. Most people I know who want this, don't think it's gonna happen.

But the only reason it wouldn't is if Rabbit ended before it's time. And we know that's not happening. Kyle Prue is a completionist, and has reiterated as long as there's Rabbit to tell he'll do anything to to tell it.

If Toad isn't aspec, you can have my first born child.
