For all the times I’ve seen the Steven Universe fandom say things I thought indefensible and completely devoid of analysis: this is not one of those times.

If you think this artbook thing is okay, you are dead wrong. And regardless of intention or not, there are a few crucial reasons why, and you cannot ignore them:

Concret/e isn’t even a gemstone, gems do not wear clothes, and you cannot tell me writing “can’t read :(” isn’t super shady. So if you don’t think that commentary alone was racist as fuck, fuck you for that.

Anybody, and I stress, anybody who works as a cartoon artist has a professional duty to know animation and history of animation like the back of their hand. Wherever you look from Warner (side-eyeing Looney Tunes) to Hanna & Barbera to Disney, it is very likely that within five minutes of viewing you will encounter at least one example of that rich history of American racist filth flooding animation. Anybody who has even the vaguest of interests in animation has seen a blackface once, and holy flying fuck, that design is the essence of blackface. Any professional artist would have looked at their quick sketch with a cool mind, observed it for 5 seconds, then crumpled it and thrown it in the trash. This thing made it in the OFFICIAL ARTBOOK and nobody. in the team. blinked once.

I love this show but yes, this is disgusting and unforgivable. And I don’t care if anyone thinks my opinion doesn’t count because of who I am, it still is.

tonight at work some racist idiot came into my work and said he didn't want a black waiter. i was just like, dumbfounded someone actually straight up asked me. what's worse, is that my manager, who is black, had to go out and talk to the guy. i don't really think the conversation or anything got heated, from what i saw. i didn't go by that guy's table the entire time he was in the restauraunt though. i was anxious and thought the guy might yell at me or try to talk to me and ask why i basically told on him for being a racist asshole.

i like, never learned anything about how to deal with requests from customers and stuff that violate civil rights laws. but apparently that's what i'm supposed to do, get a manager immediately.

that shit pissed me off. i wish we could just kick them the fuck out instead.

Maybe i'm missing something, but I think you might be a little sensitive on this topic. To me it seems to be more going for the trope of "Evil genius little girls" Which is a trope that exists as well as evil children in general. I admit I could be wrong though, maybe there is something totally racist about this, but as far as I can tell this video is relying on a trope about young girls, not some stereotype of black people being evil.

second of all she hasnt even been around for like a day and yet people are already on the “a genius child??? CLEARLY AN EVIL GENIUS!!!” trope train for like......what reason. what canon reason throws suspicion onto her. like, strictly based on facts, what has efi oladele done?? nothing exists yet in any amount of canon to claim that shes the devil (like that lovely fucking thumbnail made her out to be, lmao)

like, we all know angela ziegler gets the “secretly evil” thing all the time. but even that took some fucking time to get traction! to come around! and even that reading takes some reach thanks to ingame voice lines from other characters, reading of character bios and outside lore information, etc etc etc.  

the racism comes from the timing. like it took less than a day for a vocal majority to cry EVIL SUPER GENIUS!! to a young black girl. dont you think its pretty fucking sketchy that a dark skinned, young black girl is called into question for her success?? idk about you my guy but im real fuckin skeeved out and im not gonna tolerate a devils advocate

when i read something like “sjws might not agree but” i think about how one time this old white woman that came into my work and told me, the host who was about to seat her, “i probably shouldn’t say this but” and then proceeded to explain that she liked coming to cracker barrel because she thought the ihop had too many black people working there.
