I’m making my own post about this, but this will be in a similar vein to @wheelie-sick’s post about psychosis.

You will, most likely, meet someone who is on the schizophrenic spectrum in your life. And when you do, remember that they do not want to be violent. If they are at risk, if they are going through an episode of psychosis, your job as their loved one is to reassure them that you do not want to hurt them, that you will protect them, that you will stay with them until they feel better.

If your schizospec loved one has dangerous delusions or hallucinations, they do not want to harm people. It is not based in malice. It is most often based in fear.

When I am undergoing psychosis, I am paranoid of everything and everyone. I avoid people because they feel like just another hallucination. It is hard to differentiate between fact and fiction. Most importantly, I am at risk of lashing out at people. In the moment, my thought process is this: Who are they? Where am I? Why are they acting like they know me? If I ignore them, they can’t hurt me. If I hurt them first, they can’t hurt me. If I hurt myself, they can’t hurt me.

It is your job to tell them who you are, where you are, where they are, and that no harm is necessary and no harm will come.
