Here’s the (long time coming) update on the Future Diary Radio CDs! I’m sorry it took so long to finish this project, as always, school has me on a chokehold, but I’m glad to say the translations are finally done! In case you missed the original post, the Future Diary Radio CDs are an obscure piece of media from Future Diary that include commentary from some of the show’s voice actors, regarding their experiences voicing the characters and opinions about the series. You can now find the three tracks with the translated subtitles on my Youtube channel (daisynilla) or on the links down below. Special thanks to @iwanpepsu, @syrpai and @the-chosen-blood-teller for helping me gather the tracks from the radio CDs.
And on a semi-related note, I also wanted to use this post to comment on a couple of things that came up while doing research for this project.
1. In all of the three Radio CDs, the voice actors mention something about a live concert that happened at Shibuya AX on July 29th. I'm not sure how well-known this concert and the music featured in it are among the fandom, but given how much it is talked about in the radio CDs (and how much information I gathered on it incidentally), I figure I should make a separate post dedicated to that. Especially because of… this:
2. On one of the Radio CDs, there was a mention of the DVD cast commentaries done by the Japanese voice actors. I don't own the DVD, but I was accidentally sent the audio for these Japanese cast commentaries in response to my last post about the Radio CDs. For my sanity’s sake, I’m not translating this, (I feel like the radio CDs are a good enough stand-in for the cast commentaries) but given its mention, I wanted to provide some of the context surrounding it. Like your regular cast commentaries on any DVD’s bonus features, the voice actors share their comments of the show as they watch the episodes. The order of the voice actors featured in each episode goes as follows:
Episodes 1-2: feature commentary from Misuzu Togashi (Yukki’s VA) and Tomosa Murata (Yuno’s VA).
Episodes 3-5: Aizawa Mai (Minene’s VA, ps her voice is so high it caught me off guard), Kawahara Yoshihisa (12th’s VA) and Sendai Eri (Tsubaki’s VA).
Episodes 6-8: Sanada Asami (Reisuke’s VA) and Mizuhara Kaoru (Rea’s VA).
Episodes 18-20: Yukana (Mao’s VA) and Shiraishi Minoru (Kousaka’s VA).
Episodes 21-23: Inada Tetsu (Ryuji’s VA, aka 11th’s secretary) and Konno Hiromi (8th’s VA).
Episodes 24-26: Domon Jin (3rd’s VA) and Honda Manami (MurMur’s VA).
(Also, I'm pretty sure the English version of the DVD includes cast commentaries too, but I don't know if those are the Japanese cast commentaries with translated subtitles or if it's commentary from the American cast… probably the latter, but I guess I’ll have to look a little deeper into that.)
One Punch Man Radio CD Volume 1 and 2 are available in Bushiroad EC Shop which the Volume 2 is on sale now...
If there’s somebody who bought it (particularly the Vol. 1) may upload the audio CD here or wherever site is available.. I also wanted to know the drama played there by the casts or if there’s any news or updates together with it being announced

First, this CD is full of cuteness, 4 boys talking at the same time, joking around, laughing a lot (what kind of laugh is that, Tatsu? ww), teasing each other and being cute and silly as always.
And at the end of each track (first 4 tracks), another boy says the name of the radio in this order: Haruka, Makoto, Rin, Sousuke. It's adorable how they answer to the "Frfr!" greeting all together...oh, having so many boys in one place is such a blessing.
I'm sorry if I'll mix them up because they're speaking at the same time a lot and really...Hosoyan's laugh is beginning to sound like Mamo's.
And you may also see some confusing things and parts where I don't even know for sure what I'm saying, but well, you should expect mistakes here and there.
Track 01 - W-up (10:17)
The first track, W-up, meaning warming up. They start bt whispering among each other, and Mamo seems not to know where Nobunaga and Hosoyan are (probably joking around?) and it's so cute how the two of them tell him "I'm over here".
They start by introducing themselves, Shimazaki Nobunaga who voices Nanase Haruka (the radio host), and the guests: Suzuki Tatsuhisa who voices Tachibana Makoto speaks in his Makoto voice, so does Miyano Mamoru who voices Matsuoka Rin, and then there's Hosoya Yoshimasa who voices Yamazaki Sousuke and who doesn't follow them and speaks in a normal voice. They laugh at how he's the only one who's "club member" (Makoto and Rin are team captains and Haruka's vice captain)
When Zakki continues the introduction, he says 'I am Shimazaki Nobunaga representing Aoni Production...." and he stops and replies to himself, that he's not representing the company lol. It's how it's probably written in the script, but they all start screaming, praising Nobunaga as if he's a very important person, they sound impressed, start clapping for him - of course, they're joking around. And then Nobunaga's very confused and can't do anything about it because what can he do when it's 3 to 1 so he just starts screaming "stop it! help! that's not true" and then shouts in a rough low voice that "please stop it! i'm an underling!!!" and the boys laugh at him.
Mamo ends it by saying he should do his best with that mindset, that he's shouldering his office's name and Tatsu says he can be the representative, only now, and they encourage him to say it. And he says it hesitantly, also adding the others' details: Suzuki Tatsuhisa representing I'm Enterprise, Miyano Mamoru representing Gekidan Himawari and Hosoya Yoshimasa representing...-I was curious what he'd say- representing free.
They start shouting again of course and Hosoyan says he's a free newcomer. (Hosoya Yoshimasa doesn't belong to any company since the summer of 2014, he's freelance now).
The talk of this track is the subject of a mail they read.
The sender's pen name is "I'd go to Heaven if I were surrounded by Nobunaga-kun, Tattsun, Mamo and Hosoyan" and when Tatsu says they should do that in a nice voice, Nobunaga shows his Tatsu fangirl side going into falsetto lol. To which Hosoyan replies with "Why did Nobunaga-san go to Heaven just now?" continuing with the fact that he should be on the other side, where he surrounds the person and they laugh.
And they joke accusing him of being a homo and Nobunaga totally denies it.
The mail's subject is nicknames. She says in the mail that all the guests have some nicknames but Nobunaga seems to be mostly called by his name only adding "-kun" or "-san", and asks them to find him an affectionate nickname.
Before this, you need to know that Nobunaga has a pretty rare name, and that there is an important historical figure called Oda Nobunaga (and Mamo voiced some Oda Nobunagas in other animes). And this Oda has brothers and stuff who are called Nobu-something.
The first thing Mamo says is "Homonaga-kun" (Nobunaga says that's just teasing). Then says "Shimazaki-san" (he says he feels distance). Tatsu says "Shimazaki-shi" if Nobunaga doesn't like "-san" ("shi" is something like saying Master). He also says "friend Shimazaki" I think (and Nobunaga asks what era that's from).
Hosoyan keeps chanting Nobunaga's full name on the side trying to find a good nickname.
Mamo suggests Nobuhide (Nobunaga says that's someone else, and that he's not Oda. Mamo says they should call him "Oda-kun" and Nobunaga says there are a lot of people calling him that FUZAKETE and he needs to correct them everytime. Mamo says that then Nobunari's not good either, and Tatsu suggests Nobuhime (Princess Nobu?). Zakki doesn't understand why it's a family tree.
Mamo finally picks on Hosoyan for saying Nobunaga's name a lot like chanting some magic. Mamo asks what "Nobunaga" would turn into if they alter it and they begin saying his name fast and hazy and it becomes "No-guard" and Nobunaga ends this topic at this.
(other links for homonaga part)
It's adorable how Nobunaga says "Free! Iwatobi Channel..." and they fail so synchronize saying "ES" (probably on purpose) twice. And Zakki is confused and is about to laugh so he doesn't really sound like Haru.
Track 02 - Free Style (12:18)
At the beginning of the track, Hosoyan encourages Zakki who's preparing to say something in Haru's voice. but ends up laughing and Tatsu laughs a lot at this and Mamo says it was cute. And he says "you can do it, you can become Haruka, you are Haruka."
They read an e-mail from a girl who asks them if they heard the 1st ES radio cd (with guests Yonaga Tsubasa who voices Hazuki Nagisa and Hirakawa Daisuke who voices Ryuugazaki Rei). Nobunaga says that he's probably the only one who knows about it and continues reading, about how they talked that time that Tatsu and Mamo are on the hunted side and Nobunaga and Hosoyan are on the predators side (hence the "meat vs vegetables war" Hosoyan mentioned in the Iwatobi Channel ES 10 where he was a guest this november 2014). And Mamo and Tatsu start an evil laugh and cover Zakki's speaking. The reader tells Zakki and Hosoyan to do their best not to lose to them (which Nobunaga emphasizes) and also says: "Tattsun, Miyano-san, it's great! Do it more!"
Mamo is the first one who asks what's the reason why they're split like this and starts imitating Hosoyan who's also speaking at the same time [Iwachan ES Radio CD 2~~02:31]. And Zakki tells him not to imitate Hosoyan, saying that he sounds alike too and they talk about how Mamo used the "clone technique".
Nobunaga says that it's something Wing and Hirarin said so he doesn't know the reason. Nobunaga asks Mamo and Tatsu if they think they're on the predators side.
Hosoyan says he has an idea but Mamo and Tatsu get in his way and don't let him speak, imitating him and annoying, while Zakki tells them to listen to what he says.
Hosoyan says he thinks that Nobunaga and himself are not S (sadists) and maybe the other two have S traits. He says that among the two, he's often on the teased side, but the other two aren't picked on often.
Hosoyan says that he's talking about talking, praying and being prayed on in a conversation.
Mamo asks what's the conclusion from the answer and Zakki says that it's the idea that he and Hosoyan need to do their best, to which Tatsu asks if this was all to make themselves noticed and Mamo makes Nobunaga say something important to Tatsu (while laughing). And Zakki says "I'm sorry!". Hosoyan tells Zakki they lost, and Zakki adds that they were preyed upon.
Mamo tells the two to try to hunt them during this recording and him and Tatsu start saying things like "we're waiting" and "can you do it" or "if you can do it". [Iwachan ES Radio CD 2~~05:40]
- There's another mail where a girl asks if they ever wanted to wear a girl's underwear on their heads, because her boyfriend does that a lot. She sometimes gives him a pair worn for a little bit right after she bathes but he says washed ones aren't good and he'll only accept worn ones. She asks if this is something that happens often among couples. [Iwachan ES Radio CD 2~~06:20]
Hosoyan's the first one to say "no way it is!"
Mamo speaks in a dramatic voice and says "how should we answer this" or "Hosoya, she's asking if we'd wear freshly worn underwear on our heads!"
Hosoyan says he thinks it's not normal, and while he says that something happens and Mamo explains it. Hosoyan was holding a cup of coffee and choked a bit and Nobunaga poured water in Hosoyan's cup that already had coffee in it and now Hosoyan's coffee is very thin, and just bitter coffee. Mamo says he should've just given him the pet bottle.
Hosoyan's the one who goes back to the panties talk and he speaks with energy and everyone else just starts talking at the same time and they end up all saying "panties" repeatedly.
Nobunaga launches an attack when he says they wouldn't wear freshly worn underwear on their heads (he and Hosoyan) but asks about the hunting team. But they get out of this by not answering. And like this, only Nobunaga and Hosoyan end up talking by themselves. But they laugh when Hosoyan asks what was the purpose for what the girl sent the message, just to make them say it? And starts pretending to be angry and shouts "we lost because of this!" (there seems to be an ongoing game of winning and losing)
Mamo says that the sender sent the message because she was troubled, not to make fun of them. And Tatsu follows him, agrees dramatically and the hunted team ends up being the ones guily, because they took it as a joke. And Mamo asks them if they don't have anything to say to the sender, and the two apologize, again.
(also here is something, and here an audio clip with a translation)
Track 03 - Style One (19:54)
There's a mail from a mom of a 3 year old girl who likes Momo. And they try to make the voice of a 3 year old girl. She likes the scene in where Rin grabs Momo by the hoodie (when they meet in Free! ES 02) and she makes the mom grab her imitating that scene. The sender asks if the guys imitate anything from Free! or use something as a joke. Tatsu says that something everyone does is imitate Tsuda Kenjirou. And then Hosoyan mentions how he and Mamo did the fist bump like Sousuke and Rin, and he also brags how he got to know Mamo's temperature through that; and they say it's a nice thing. (Mamo also talked about that in the 7th episode of the Iwatobi Channel ES)
Nobunaga says he and Tatsu did something like in the end cards, meaning playing games together (and Tatsu calls it Sim City), at Nobunaga's house. And when Mamo says that it's like they're living together and Nobunaga denies it, Tatsu says that all there's left to do it's to bring his pajama to Nobunaga's house. And Mamo says that Tatsu's all for moving in.
When Nobunaga says there were other things similar to the anime, like the way they sat in the recording studio, Mamo says Hosoyan sat very far away fom him (why can't Tatsu stop laughing?) and asks if Rin and Sousuke are distant. Zakki says that the first 5 sat according to their relationships and after Hosoyan came somehow one of them went to the other even if they sat apart. And that there were times when they sat next to each other.
And they talk about a time when Mamo called Hosoyan over next to him. And Tatsu who was only listening points out that it means they're not that close if they need to search for these coincidences. But Nobunaga and Hosoyan say they get along well.
[Iwachan ES Radio CD 2~04:45] And Mamo asks at the end "what? what were you talking about?" and Hosoyan says it's about Nobunaga being a homo and everyone laughs.
[Iwachan ES Radio CD 2~05:15] There's a message from someome else who calls all of them by nicknames (Tattsun, Mamo-chan, Hosoyan, Zakki). Finally someone says Zakki because they didn't think about it before, and Nobunaga says that Shimono Hiro calls him that.
The sender talks about the last episode and how each of the characters started waking on their own paths and asks them how the guys would like the characters to grow and where to get.
Tatsu stars well but in the end he talks about the Free! ES 13 part where we're shown Makoto in university and how they said before that he'd be popular. and he says that maybe he'd be have his Tokyo debut and be scouted to be a model or something and it'd go well but he'd degrade and they beep him out and he'd end up going even lower and living a no good life. And Zakki cuts in and says revolted how that definitely won't happen.
[Iwachan ES Radio CD 2~07:00] Hosoyan asks Zakki what would Haru do and Zakki says they showed something in the anime already. But he says he didn't ask director Utsumi about it directly. They (Hosoyan) ask him about something father than his dream, about when he'd be an adult. And Zakki says that if they'd talk about university, he thinks that he went to Seijuurou's university. (because he thought what school would scout him after the nationals) And he says he'd like to see something with Seijuurou and Haru would ignore him when Sei would bother him with his enthusiasm but he's someone who'd probably pull him along. And he feels that when you interact with Seijuurou, you get a bit of his spirits, like how it's in Samezuka and maybe Haru would get more enthusiasm for competition and all.
[Iwachan ES Radio CD 2~09:00]
Hosoyan liked the talk and Zakki continues saying that probably who everyone wonders about is Sousuke, because they don't know either what happened to him and can only imagine it and he stops because everyone is silent when he's talking seriously. And Mamo and Tatsu act revolted that they're looked down upon. Hosoyan says that feels as if it's the first time he's seeing the two keep silent and says that he'll talk. And Mamo says they were listening quietly because it was Nobunaga's turn.
[Iwachan ES Radio CD 2~10:00]
Hosoyan says he thinks Sousuke maybe would stay away from swimming for a period. He says he talked to Miyano about it before at the recording about how he swam in the relay while injured and after that when Rin told him not to crush his own potential before trying. And Rin knows his pain as he's his best friend but still tells that to Rin. And Mamo says it's probably because it was Sousuke and they can understand each other that he could say it. And etc. And he wanted to say it no matter what.
Hosoyan says Sousuke thinks needs time to think and wishes he'll still be involved with to swimming in some way. And Mamo wonders if he can do it, because he think it'd hurt if you try to put yourself in his shoes because he'd need to look at the other people sparkling and he'd wish he'd been there too. And they all wonder what he'd want to do, and conclude that they shouldn't think about it now. Nobunaga says there are many possibilities, like maybe it's not impossible to heal or maybe he'd take on his family business.
And he tries to pass the baton to Tatsu but he says "we deceived you for a long time=damasareru" instead of "we let you stay quiet for a long time=damaraseru". And Nobunaga ends up apologizing again and Hosoyan adds that they're being preyed upon.
[Iwachan ES Radio CD 2~14:00]
Tatsu wants to hear about Rin, what he imagines. And Mamo says he'll take a gold medal and they talk about how it sounded like a relative old man talking about Rin and they start pretending to be old men who knew him and things. And Mamo says he wishes he'll fulfill his dream.
Mamo says that each of them choose to walk ahead alone after graduation. They earned a precious bond in high school, but ahead of that, they go into society and will fight by themselves. Of course they'll support each other but they'll find their own way alone and decide on what they'll do and grow up. That's why they'll be apart but the bond they earned in the anime will help them in the future. And he wonders how they'll fight when they'll be alone.
[Iwachan ES Radio CD 2~16:00]
They're all pleased to hear such nice talk and Nobunaga tells Tatsu it's his turn but Tatsu pretends not to get what it's about. Mamo says that he already talked about it but Zakki wants to hear a different version. Zakki says that Makoto has a clear idea for his future but stutters and says another word so they tease him again. And Nobunaga says that he thinks Makoto's going to be okay and will do his best for his dream. When Mamo laughs that Nobunaga talks about it himself and Zakki pouts saying that it's because Tatsu won't answer him. Hosoyan says that he seems to still stay involved with swimming by being involved with other people because he's good at communicating. He says that from the point of view of strangers Haru may look like too much of a genius so it's a pain to involve yourself with him. But Makoto who can also get along so well with Haru would maybe get involved with a lot of people.
Tatsu says that Makoto has the most clear goal, not as an aspiration, but as a fact, and he can see it happen. And that Makoto will probably not waver in his way and he really wants to teach children so Tatsu can see the single way ahead, so there's nothing to say.
And that he was swimming, also competitively, but he still chose something else.
Mamo speaks in a Rin voice and says
Rin: "But I still think you can also aim for the world"
Makoto: "Rin...but I..." (whispering around) "...I want to be on the teaching side-"
Rin: "Let's swim together on the world stage!"
Makoto: "Wait a bit, Rin...no way..."
And Nobunaga ends it here ending the radio CD corner. And everyone bursts into laughs. He says Haru can't interfere with his talk so he ended it like this.
Track 04 - Shiren no Open Water (Open water of probation) (11:27)
They say this is a special corner for the radio CD where they'll challege themselves to different things related to water or something.
They do a trial on how the color of a liquid in a cup will change if they put water in. There are 4 choices, but before Nobunaga says them, Mamo and Tatsu laugh saying it's light brown (because of what happened earlier) 1) transparent 2) yellow 3) light brown 4) black
Tatsu chooses 3, and Mamo says that if the coffee's black, it'll become browner and Tatsu says that it turns from 4 to 3. They both choose 3.
Hosoyan chooses yellow and Nobunaga also chooses 3.
It becomes transparent. (I think they poured water on water?)
But anyway the colour you chose is supposed to show you how malicious you are. Mamo asks what yellow would mean in that case and Hosoyan is revolted saying that yellow's one of the choices. And Tatsu makes the joke about the liquid coming from the body, yeah.
[Iwachan ES Radio CD 2~02:40]
The next question is how far you'd dive in the seawater without using an oxygen tank or something.
Mamo's answer is until he can barely reach down with his feet, meaning 2 meters, because he'd drown otherwise.
Nobunaga says 5 meters, Hosoyan 3 meters and Mamo asks them if they can all swim so much. Tatsu says he could go 10 meters if he tries enough and they say it's cool.
The result is supposed to show you how much you want to escape from society and they start laughing.
Mamo says sorry that they said it's cool, joking about the fact that Tatsu wanted to escape from this world. And Tatsu continues the joke saying he doesn't fit with this world and that lately he only thinks if he should go to the mountains or the sea, and that he's a lost child in the concrete jungle.
[Iwachan ES Radio CD 2~04:20]
They start the manager name medley, where they say senders' pen names for the characters or seiyuu and they react to them, but it's different this time because there are four boys. SO each of them has 4 cards with manager names for themselves from among which they choose one and everyone else says something in reply to it.
Nobunaga volunteers to go first if no one else wants and he chooses "I want to be the laundry basket that receives Haru-chan's lukewarm clothes when he takes them off".
He wants to say the other 3 manager names while the others are thinking about what to reply and he says one of them ("Haruka is so beautiful I want to put him in a museum" and Mamo stops him because it'd confuse everyone listening.
Mamo is the first one to reply to the manager name Zakki chose and says "I want to wear them on my head" - of course remembering of the panties mail and Zakki recognizes the reference, and Tatsu says "that's a good one" in a serious voice lol.
The second one is Hosoyan who says "but they stink of sweat".
Mamo (?) or Tatsu(?) I'm not sure who says what if I hear Mamo twice...if you hear something else please tell me?) says "then just become that".
[Iwachan ES Radio CD 2~07:00]
Hosoyan chooses the manager name "I want to be squished between Makoto, Rin and Sousuke's pectoral muscles".
Mamo and Tatsu somehow write the same thing, and say "it's warm, isn't it?"
[Iwachan ES Radio CD 2~08:00]
The name Tatsu chose: "I want firefighter Mako-chan to splash water on me".
To which Hosoyan says "it's cold, isn't it?"
Mamo chooses "I want to be the bed cover on the bed when Rin-chan and Haru-chan slept together"
Tatsu says "I want to be the mattress".
Nobunaga says "Then I'll become the pillow!" and for some reason starts screaming for help after that?! (did something happen there or what?)
Hosoyan says "these two are big!".
Mamo says that maybe he'd also be somewhere at the feet in the picture.
Tatsu says another one: "I am a corporate slave who can do her best when the work's tough thinking I'm working to send allowance to Makoto who went to the capital".
They laugh because this manager name is just an affirmation, not expressing some wish.
And he says another one: "I want to become socks and be worn by Mako-chan".
To which Nobunaga replies (a bit too eagerly) with "and I want to be stepped on" and Mamo repeats what he said. Hosoyan replies with "Mako-chan is Ishida Junichi" (someone known for not wearing socks -> "Ishida is famous for not wearing socks in public. He claims that this started after he saw Italians not wearing socks while he was in Milan in 1985") and they all laugh saying she won't even get worn.
(another thing about the manager name part here and here)
Track 05 - Cool Down (08:17)
They decide the MVP for today in the last track, and the staff has a trophy for that.
The staff chose the winner and it's Hosoyan (for the Ishida Junichi joke?)
The staff tell them about the trophy but it's censored to us (we don't hear the staff talking) but it's something similar to some merchandise related to Rin-chan? I think. It's has a Free! logo.
[Iwachan ES Radio CD 2~01:30]
They introduce themselves in the end again (and only Tatsu is the one who says the whole introduction in Makoto's voice and the others say their own names normally and the character's name in the character voice. But this time Hosoyan also speaks in his Sousuke voice, he didn't in the beginning)
They talk about the trophy at the end.
And Mamo jokes about Hosoyan being a lecher for gining that answer. (doesn't say which so I won't say something either). Hosoyan says he's not one and Mamo said he always thought he was one and says that Hosoyan loves interesting things but he always sits quietly in a corner looking harmless and he should come over in the conversation but he has a face like "I'm okay, I'm not like that, I can't be silly like you all" and they laugh at how Mamo speaks. And Mamo goes ask him to do something together and he imitates Hosoyan being bewildered because Mamo meddles with him.
And Hosoyan says Mamo also loves interesting things and when Mamo asks him what that is he says that it's perverted things.
Mamo says he's not a lecher because he doesn't hide it and he declares that he likes interesting things, but Hosoyan doesn't declare it. Hosoyan replies that he does say it as well but when he's one step behind, he keeps staying behind and can't catch up. He's not hiding it.
Mamo says that Hosoyan should enter their conversation without thinking about it and if Mamo's doing some little skit with Tatsu. And Tatsu says it's okay and they start doing something, speaking in old-men voices and the two laugh (you need to hear these laughs) and Nobunaga and Hosoyan say it's hard to butt in that kind of thing.
[Iwachan ES Radio CD 2~05:30]
Mamo says they were wondering how the talk would turn out if these four got together and they knew it'd be fun, but not in what way. And they say it was fun.
Mamo asks "how does it feel to be hunted?" and Hosoyan answers "I'm always hunted so I've become thickheaded when it comes to this and I don't know anymore" and doesn't think anything special about it and he's a veteran and Tatsu laughs a lot.
and they talk a bit more about the hunters and hunted.
They end the CD here, and the recording continues when they leave the studio.
