Replacing the OLED display of a Pure Evoke D4 DAB radio
The OLED display of my Pure Evoke D4 radio gave up the ghost and no longer worked. We put up with this for a while but found it increasingly difficult to operate the radio. According to various online fora this is a known problem affecting Pure radios. The display goes dim and eventually packs up altogether. What to do about it? Send it for expensive repair or buy a new one? Can it be repaired diy I wondered? I sourced the spare part from Ebay and fitted it. This is a record of my experiences for posterity.
1. Find the spare part. This I did through the the wonderful guys at mk_best deals on EBay.

2. Disconnect the radio from the mains electricity supply.
3. Remove the 6 screws from the back-plate. Keep them somewhere safe.
4. Lift out the back panel carefully as far as you can - it’ll be still attached to the front plate and board by a lot of wiring. Unscrew the black wire that’s connected to the underside of the handle. Keep the screw somewhere safe.
5. Find the screws holding the front plate in place (I think there were 8 of these). Unscrew them and keep them somewhere safe.
6. Loosen the front plate and remove, passing the still attached back-plate through the radio body (had to twist it to get it through). You now have the front plate and circuit board and attached back plate and circuit board, ready to replace the OLED display. Lay the parts on the table in front of you.
7. Locate the ribbon connector to the OLED display. It comes up through a “letter box” opening in the circuit board covered by a rubber seal. Prise this partly open.
8. Locate two black plastic tabs on the connector where the ribbon attaches to the circuit-board. Prise these back with a small screwdriver and the ribbon will be released.
9. You can now access the back of the front plate and undo 2 screws holding the OLED in place. Remove the old display and replace with the new one, first removing the protective plastic film. I found the old display had a piece of black tape across it - I replaced this on the new one and screwed it back into the front plate.
10. You now have to thread the ribbon back through the letter box and push it into the connector and return the plastic tabs to the closed position. A bit fiddly but otherwise easy. Reseal the rubber across the letter box opening.
11. Pass the back plate back into the body from the front and line up the front plate with the screw holes. Refit the screws. I found that long nosed pliers were helpful here.
12. Replace the wire to the underside of the handle.
13. Return the back plate into position ensuring that the wadding material is clear of the screw holes. Line up the back-plate screw holes. Insert screws and re-fix.
14. I turned on radio and much to my delight had a working OLED display!
