During the late 1980′s and early 1990′s British Rail (BR) were being prepared for privatisation and there was a greater focus on the individual contribution made by all the separate parts of the business. This allowed for some individuality not only in the way the businesses were run, but also the way they presented themselves. It was a time of great innovation with liveries and my personal favourite was the Railfreight Sector brand. Whilst one business there were separate customers; Coal, Petroleum, Construction and Distribution and a two tone grey livery was developed with a 'blocky' branding. Here is an example of a locomotives with the different brandings: 56001 Whatley at Reading on the 6th May 1988 is moving stone from the quarries West of Westbury to Acton near London and is carrying the Construction branding.47306 The Sapper is seen at St Blazey on the 31st August 2002 with Distribution branding. 58024 is seen leaving Toton, near Nottingham, with Coal Hoppers and branded Coal on 22nd May 1990. Finally, 37888 is branded Petroleum and is waiting signals at Reading, heading west with an oil train from Ripple Lane on 22nd February 1988.
A selection of Class 47’s in different liveries and locations. Once so numerous around the networks they sometimes didn’t get a second glance.

What is Intermodal Freight?
Intermodal freight is a transportation method that combines multiple modes of transport primarily rail and truck to move cargo efficiently from origin to destination.
Typically, freight is loaded into a shipping container or trailer and transported by rail for the long-distance portion of the journey. Once the shipment reaches a regional rail hub, trucks handle the final delivery to the customer’s location.
This hybrid shipping model offers businesses the flexibility of trucking along with the fuel efficiency and lower costs of rail transport.
How Intermodal Shipping Works
The intermodal shipping process generally follows these steps:
Pickup by Truck Freight is collected from the shipper’s warehouse or facility.
Transfer to Rail Terminal The container is transported to a rail hub where it is loaded onto a train.
Long-Haul Rail Transportation Rail handles the majority of the journey, reducing fuel consumption and transportation costs.
Final Mile Delivery At the destination rail terminal, the container is transferred back to a truck for delivery.
Because the cargo remains in the same container throughout the journey, handling risks and damage are minimized.

Benefits of Intermodal Freight
1. Cost Savings
Rail transportation is significantly more fuel-efficient than long-haul trucking, allowing businesses to reduce shipping expenses—especially for long-distance freight.
2. Environmental Sustainability
Intermodal rail freight helps lower carbon emissions and fuel consumption. Many businesses are choosing intermodal solutions as part of their sustainability goals.
3. Improved Capacity
During peak shipping seasons, truck availability can become limited. Intermodal transportation provides additional shipping capacity through rail networks.
4. Reliable Transit
Rail schedules are generally consistent and less affected by highway congestion, helping improve delivery predictability.
5. Reduced Cargo Damage
Since freight stays within the same container during transit, the risk of damage from excessive handling is reduced.
Industries That Benefit from Intermodal Freight
Many industries rely on intermodal transportation for efficient logistics operations, including:
Retail and eCommerce
Manufacturing
Automotive
Food and beverage
Consumer packaged goods
Construction materials
Industrial equipment
Businesses shipping high-volume or long-distance freight often see the greatest savings and efficiency improvements.
