When I explained to my grandson that I would ride 5 miles to school on my bike without a phone, he stared at me like I had told him I walked on water. It struck me then just how much childhood has evolved. In this video, I take you back in time through the ordinary things we used to take for granted—such as being unreachable, getting around with paper maps, or just being bored—and why those very same things would utterly overwhelm many children today. This isn't to knock the younger generation, but to dig into what's been lost in a world of always-on connection, instant response, and over-scheduled lives. We gained resilience, self-sufficiency, problem-solving, and creativity from life's small struggles back then. Now, those same struggles are avoided or delegated to technology. I use anecdotes, personal experiences, and studies to illustrate why these "hardships" from our childhood could be the solution to raising today's children to succeed in a complicated world. No matter if you're a grandparent, parent, or just someone who's nostalgic for an unregulated era, this video will make you think—and hopefully encourage you to share some of these lessons with the next generation. If it gets shared, let's see what kind of dialogue can be sparked about what actually equips children for life.
