Getting "political" is the most alienating experiences I've ever had in my life (and I say this as the token Phoebe of the friend group). When I made the decision almost a year ago to go to my first protest to stand against DAPL, my life shifted entirely. I found this community of individuals with just as much love and compassion as I had, if not more, who took time out of their days, away from their part or full time jobs, families, priorities, and lives, to come and stand together, to listen to people share their stories, to march and chant together, to help in any way they knew how. I previously hadn't seen this. But it only really takes one good experience with good hearts to create a habit of recurring stands and symbols of solidarity. Still, while I was delving into this renaissance of spirit and purpose, I found myself more alone with pre-established friendships. Conversations stilled as soon as I brought up political issues. Some avoided the subject altogether. Some lashed out. Some rolled their eyes. But most ignored me. Most ignored my invitations, my pleads for solidarity. I lost a lot of friends. I became vastly alienated from one of my larger pre-existing communities. Honestly, I'll take jabs from others over isolation and being thrust into obscurity by people I loved. It hurt. A lot. It still does, but I refuse to give up on others. Why is it that when someone becomes more socially responsible and conscious that they're cast out? I've come to the conclusion that I will continue to lose friendships if I choose to pursue a level of sociopolitical contentiousness. To those of you who feel like we stand in familiar waters, know I stand with you. For those of you who feel fragments of conviction for being on the other side of things, I want you to ask yourself why you push people away when they push for socioeconomic and environmental accountability. I also want you to consider what side of history you'd prefer to be on. Will you stand for peace or will you watch as history goes by? Or worse yet, will you find yourself standing on the other side? That's up to you. // #encouragement #asseenincolumbus #columbus #columbusigers #igcolumbus #protest (at Ohio Statehouse - Rotunda)
Today, not only do we celebrate the beauty of this earth, but we put an extra emphasis on taking care of the intricately diverse planet we live on. She is so plentiful, sturdy, and resilient, but everything has a limit. We're hurting her faster than she can recover. But conscientious, smart choices made by each of us every day, paired with access to scientific findings, theses, and sustainable solutions can help turn our actions around, and as a result help heal the earth and fulfill our roll of stewardship. Today, I will be joining thousands of people as we march for science. I will be marching in Columbus, but there are marches in every state's cities. Let's stand up for the earth. We are stronger together. ✊🏼🌍✌🏼// #marchforscience #science #progress #earthday #loveyourmother #motherearth #sustainability #sustainableliving #mniwiconi #waterislife #istandwithstandingrock #thefightisnotover #standtogether #wearestrongertogether #scienceisimportant #igcolumbus #columbus #columbusigers #thegentlestrength
Spring is here. Time to spend this season in the wilderness. Solo hiking has become a normal thing for me, and I enjoy it quite a lot. (But hiking can be just as enjoyable with the right people, too). No matter how you hike or if you enjoy hiking solo or with others, I encourage you to get outside and breathe in the fresh air. Nature is wonderful. //
Last weekend was the March for Science nationwide, this weekend is the People's Climate March (which is also nationwide). We're headed to D.C. for the main march, with an estimated 12,000 attendees, but most cities across the nation will be marching as well. Climate change is real. Global warming is real. We as a human race have been, by and large, incredibly irresponsible with the way we've treated the earth. But there are hundreds of thousands of people across the world who are willing to stand up for the earth and its inhabitants. Where do you stand? Are you willing to do your part to stand up and speak up to protect the earth? Come, join us. Let's stand up for sustainable choices and conservation of natural resources and wild spaces together. We are stronger together. // #thegentlestrength #columbusigers #columbus #igcolumbus #marchforscience #peoplesclimatemarch #climatechange #sustainability #accountability #protecttheearth #washingtondc #lgbtq #wearestrongertogether #mniwiconi #waterislife #march #peacefulwarrior #peacefulprotest #medicinetribe #snapseed #vsco #vscocam #vscophile #vscophoto #vscocamgram (at Columbus, Ohio)
Forgiveness is hard. When someone hurts us, that can stick like a thorn to our ribs for a long time. A lot of times we want our wrongdoers to acknowledge the pain that they’ve caused us, to apologize, and only then will we forgiv them. But carrying around the weight of that pain until the right person apologizes can do far more harm to you, mind, body, and soul, than the initial pain caused. You need to forgive. You need to let go. Need to give grace. Once you do this, you can continue to go about your life in love and compassion. There’s a poem I want to share with you. I think it exemplifies the power of forgiveness, for you and for the world around you. / “Forgive everything that has ever happened life is everything we can imagine laid out in patterns of pain and passion you cannot control it so keep your compassion There are no accidents there are no factions there is no us or them nothing to borrow or lend no enemy or friend and only forgiveness can make that happen The only battle worth the fight from the Rwandan genocide to the Seven Sisters forgiving Orion for chasing them across the skies every night forgiveness is for giving so give yourself this gift from time to time and let all of your mistakes become all of your greatest gifts in disguise.” (Trevor Hall, Forgive) / Forgiveness isn’t necessarily forgetting, but it’s acknowledging that you have the power, the resolve, to let pain pass. To continue to live fully despite the actions of another upon you. Forgiveness is a gift, for you, and for the world around you. Breathe in goodness, and breathe out and negativity, resentment, hatred, and pain. Love and let go. //
