Yu Gi Oh Randomfish Rants
So.....I'm a big anime fan. Especially in the forms of Pokemon, Digimon and Yu Gi Oh (I didn't have access to Dragonball... so I need to get some of them later on) so throughout my childhood and teenage years I was obsessed with these shows before getting to stuff like Hellsing, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun and more.
So while I was watching these shows a lot of questions were raised the older I got and I'm just going to rant about a couple of them along with my perspective theories regarding Yu Gi Oh due to them being the ones I question the most (with Pokemon and Digimon it's not so poignant)
Item 1 The Orichalcos vs The Shadow Realm: In the fourth season of original Yu Gi Oh it is revealed (albeit very poorly) that ancient Egypt was not the place where the game of Duel Monsters originated, it was Atlantis. Also in this season the big bad is a guy named Dartz and a group of Matrix rip-offs are working on gathering souls for a creature named “The Great Leviathan” who was a gift to Dartz from a force known as The Orichalcos, which they all wear around their necks and can use as a card to create a seal that takes the soul of the person who loses the duel involving said card. This is a departure from the norm of The Shadow Realm, a place where you were taken during a shadow game (always by a person who wielded a millennium item) which was used to manipulate a duel in favour of the one who took the duellist there, mainly Pegasus, Marik and Yami Bakura. However while The Shadow Realm and games were created 5000 years ago and the monsters in stone tablets used in these contests, the Orichalcos and Atlantis and all of that took place 10000 years ago! So the question in my mind became, which was the stronger of the two set ups and which one was more of a villain? Well, in terms of their motivations, Dartz wanted to rid the world of humanity and start again, making the world pure again by association. However Bakura and, later on Zork wanted to just plunge the world into darkness and bring the shadow realm or the dark world into the real world thus bringing about total darkness, the end of humanity and purely monsters would reign with Zork ruling over the world forever because... he just thinks it should be that way. So in terms of that, there is no choice, while Dartz's motives are purer than you would think, Zork and Bakura have the best motivation you can have for a villain, doing it just because you can. But in terms of The Shadow Realm vs The Seal of Orichalcos which was the better dark setting, while the seal did take your soul if you lost the duel and your soul was used to fuel the Great Leviathan, in the Shadow Realm, you could potentially lose your memories, you energy and even your soul before even winning or losing a match, Marik had some of the best uses for the Shadow Realm that was used for a villain of the show, using it to drain the energy of Joey Wheeler, taking Mai Valentine's memories and even destroying the good side of himself if he lost life points, just to try and manipulate the duel his way! The Shadow Realm, to me anyway is the greater threat in the show, primarily because of the way that it is a much more sadistic tool to use in the show, the seal is a powerful weapon to take your soul but the Shadow Realm is more of a torture chamber than anything else.
Item 2 The GX stuff in relation to the original: In Yu Gi Oh GX we get several nods to indicate that this is directly after the original show including appearances by The Paradox Brothers, Solomon Moto, Pegasus and even in the season 4 that was not released over here there is even a duel between Jaden and Yugi that involves weird time travel type thingy! But suffice to say, the original Yu Gi Oh and Yu Gi Oh GX are related in terms of the timeline. But there are things in the GX run that would have affected things or potentially affected things in the original; for example, The Dark Light, a force that streams across to Earth and hits it every so often, created disasters and all sorts of things. To me, that creates a new problem of did Dark Light affect anything to do with Atlantis all those millennia ago? Might have, it may have diverted the meteor that contained the Orichalcos stone to Earth that caused the events of Season 4 to happen in the first place! Then there's stuff like, the all around change in duel disks. I get they went with a new design for the new series, but I was under the original impression that only Duel Academies across the world had access to those, when you left the school, you had to use one of the duel disks from the original show but that's more of a nitpick than anything else. The only other thing that bugs me are The Sacred Beasts and why they were sealed away in the first place, first of all, they were obviously designed to be other versions of the Egyptian God Cards and if you don't believe me just look at them and you'll get it immediately but also, I don't know if at any point Seto Kaiba would have been okay with anyone hiding anything that important on something he owned. And before you think to yourself how do we know this then tell me, who else would have the money or the ability to build schools for duelling all around the world? And more importantly, who else would need such an ego boost that he would then create a class system within their school where the Egyptian Gods were the houses and Slifer the Sky Dragon was lowest and the highest was Obelisk the Tormentor, the only god card that Kaiba ever used in anyway. But back to my point, Kaiba wouldn't want the Sacred Beasts to be locked away, he'd want to use them! While Pegasus and possibly Chancellor Shepherd may have been able to convince him that it was for the best to lock up those cards, the fact that they were locked up is a sign to me that either he was convinced,which unless Mokuba was involved wasn't going to happen; or he knew nothing about it and they were buried in secret which raising the even more interesting question of why does Shepherd still have a job or has Kaiba fired the Super Intendant who wanted the sacred beasts for himself? And also, the Shadow charms, not nearly as impressive looking as the items and also, nowhere near as powerful, just saying
