Eskimo Kisses One-Shot
Eskimo Kisses One-Shot Scout Comics 2019 Written by Christopher Sebela & Randy Stone Illustrated by Henry Ponciano Originally, the word Eskimo came from an Agonquin term for "eater of flesh," but that definition has been lost to the ages, until now. Present day, an isolated town in Northern Canada discovers the true origins when a stranger arrives and they are overrun by cannibalistic creatures. Along with the help of some locals, the town's police officer and his pregnant wife must do anything they can to get out alive. I am totally in love with this! I am just sad it's a one-shot because what Steve Niles did with Vampires these guys did to Werewolves. However what we see here takes even that a step further by utilising local legend and mythology and turns the notch up past ten. I don't know how many folks knew what the term Eskimo really meant, I did but I'm a junkie for the shows on Discovery and National Geographic, but once you read this you will never forget it. I am also amazingly impressed with the way that this story fits into this double sized issue. Could we have had more, oh yeah we could've as it stands we could've learned where they came from, more of their ancestry, what brought them here. Also the ending could've been different and somehow I am not buying what they were selling Doug. Still that being said I am being selfish because I totally want to see, know and learn more. If the story was mediocre I wouldn't say any of this but what Christopher and Randy do with this is so intriguing and so thought provoking that you just want more. The way that this is being told is spectacular. The story & plot development we see through the sequence of events and how we learn information is incredibly well done. The way that the guys manage to not only make the space fit but the way they take us through the story is mindbogglingly good. Christopher is someone who's work I always enjoy reading, I think he's mad talented and while I am unfamiliar with Randy the two make a good pair here. The character development is superb and that we get to know the characters as well as we do in the limited time we see them is something else that I find impressive. The pacing is superb and the way the twists and turns emerge and how we see those affect how the ebb & flow of the book makes for some great reading. The interiors here are exceptional. The linework is strong and sure and the way that we see the varying weights being utilised to bring out the attention to detail is superb. I like the composition inside the panels and how they work with the backgrounds to create depth perception, bring out the scale and the size and scope of the book. There is a really nice creativity in the way the page layouts are utilised and then to see the angles and perspective in the panels show a wonderful eye for storytelling. The creativity and imagination in what we see is great and the way we see the beasts is proof positive of this. The one thing I would like to see more of are backgrounds there are few too many blanks but then again what we see is amazing so. The colour work is extremely well done. The night time work with all the shades of blue and grey really showcase the linework to their fullest. The pops of red being the only colour we see is impactful to say the least. This really is such a great book and yes I want more and even if we don't get more of this then I want more work from these creators on new projects. Once again Scout Comics has a book that needs your attention and showcases that small-press is the home of today's cutting edge storytelling.
