working on rank 9, i know that a lot of it is going to be poverty porn. idk that it is necessarily wholly avoidable, but i'm hoping to mitigate it.

one thing that bothers me in a lot of stories with characters who are poor are also proud and don't want handouts - the noble poor person, i guess, who works for what they get and will never accept charity. which i kinda get, it's like my dad, but i also just wanted to get rid of that in rank 9. instead of poor niners refusing charity and being suspicious of each other, i want to show a community that, yeah, can barely manage to find something to cover their backs, but also take care of each other; people with good fortune are likely to share out their brief surplus, workers let others know about potential job opportunities even if it hurts their own chances, sometimes money pools when someone beloved is deathly ill, kids help each other out at school and with the exams.

rank 9 is going to be depressing, but i wanted to keep a thread of hope and support. niners are touchy feely with each other, people have friends, they get together and share dinners and it's not all 100% 'we're starving and there is no joy in the world and we only exist as a backdrop to emphasize the MCs' struggles.'

and when there is someone being cruel, being suspicious, taking advantage of others..........

well, they're from uprank.

What's wrong with... Wyatt #2 and #5

2. a trait they don’t have enough of (ex. too little pride = insecurity)

wyatt has absolutely no pride in himself, to cop out and take the example listed here. he doesn’t think he’ll ever amount to anything bc he can’t read and won’t ever learn and it doesn’t matter that he’s good at carving little wooden knickknacks or works hard or is totally selfless, absolutely none of this is going to make him amount to anything in the eyes of the city they live in, and about all he’s good for is taking care of riley.

5. a trait they’re not ashamed of (but maybe should be)

he no longer cares about the idea of learning anymore. wyatt has no ambition for himself, and riley’s bothered him so much about trying to learn to read and other things that it’s just put his back up and now he has almost a weird sort of reverse-pride in his own failure.

Wyatt was okay with being socially worthless, but he had higher hopes for his half-sister.

Not too high, of course - it was bad luck to voice a wish for too much, but anything was a step up from Rank 9. Riley was smart enough to easily carry them to Rank 7, at the very least, and while they would both have to find jobs, Wyatt wouldn’t have to worry about finding clothes and medicine for her.

status:  i haven’t written it for a while because there was one gross scene i couldn’t get out of my head so i wrote it and then hid in a hole from my own psyche. i keep meaning to get back to it but idek what the ending is supposed to be. i feel like the story would work so much better as a tv show.

What's wrong with... Riley, #1 and #3

1. a trait they have too much of  (ex. too much pride = arrogance)

these ones were haaaaard /whines

riley has too much optimism! which is great, most of the time, except she goes hard on the “you’re not a quitter!!!” line and tends to think the best of most people/cirumstances. it’s idealism to a fault, and drives wyatt nuts.

3. a trait they express in the wrong way

honestly i’m sorry i don’t. i don’t know. i haven’t really written riley enough. maybe the optimism/idealism thing i mentioned already? maybe her intelligence makes her arrogant??? who knows!!! not me!!!!!!! know my own characters?????? ridiculous.
