Brittany and a silent (but effective) coming out:
One of the biggest thing Gleeks complain obout is probably the lack of a proper coming out scene of Brittany’s character - in pretty clear contrast to her girlfriends, Santana Lopez, huge coming out storyline.
Personally, I feel like these complaints come from either straight ppl or just really dumb gays (sorry). Either way, I genuinely feel like they have way too much time in their hands and kindly ask for them to literally just shhhut it.
Many people sadly gain their knowledge about queer ppl, their dynamics and struggles, through tv show and the internet, which is honestly a far stretch from the ‘truth’ and what being gay, and everything that evolves that, actually is. That is also why we should keep fighting for better and more diverse representation!!! These people, tend, through no fault of their own, to picture/think that coming out - both in real life and on screen - is basically just this (1) huge thing where either someone screams in everyone’s face how gay they are or they throw a huge GaY party. Well I’m sorry to crush dreams but it’s not. I mean it could be, if you want it to be....- some gays just even ride a unicorn farting rainbows all the way to Las Vegas . But Coming out is more about accepting yourself completely and feeling comfortable enough to share it, maybe with just one person or the entire world. They way people come out differs from person to person, and it is heavily if not solely influenced by the family environment people are surrounded by.
The perfect example is Brittana’s relationship.
Santana is no secret comes from Lime Heights, a place where acceptance does not seem to thrive- or rappresentation for all that matter -. Furthermore it is shown throughout the beginning of season 3 that, our fav closeted lesbian, Santana, is mostly scared of coming out to her family, and does not seem to care much about the opinion of her peers. which if you have a functioning brain might make you think that her family doesn’t exactly go around with a rainbow flag tattooed on their foreheads. With this it should be clear that Santana wasn’t given the choise of “not being straight”. That’s why Santana doesn’t admit - not even to herself - until the middle of season 2 that she might not be straight. Being anything but straight was never on the table for her. She had to come out in the way that she did, because she is changing the idea her family had on her. She has to explain to them that the idea they created of her, is not who she is. That her sexuality is not going to change who she is a person, beacuse it was always a part of who she was.
Brittany on the other hand had a completely different experience. First of all I want to highlighten everyone with the notion that my dear Britt never hid her sexuality. And there are plenty of exemples from Season 1, 2 AND 3. Disclaimer: Not denying that she was much more open about it during season 3. but my girl was very much openly bisexual from the start. You’re brain is just a tad too straight centered. Now I very much like to name all the time that my bi-corn non-chalantely said and did the gayest shit.. but honestly - just get yourself cultured. Unlike Miss Lopez, Miss S. Pierce grew up in a very much accepting environment. it’s ironically canon, that her coming out simply... didn’t happen. I headcanon that when since she was little she had crushes on both boys and girls, and she would tell all about it to her parents, who would just be equally exited in both cases. So she never had to come to term with her sexuality because to her (and her family) she is just a human that happens to fall in love also with ppl of the same sex, unlike Santana, she was given the choice of not being straight. And most importantly she didn’t get judged for it. So the reason why Britt doesn’t come out of the closet is because she never even had a urge to hide in closet in the first place never felt like she needed to.
Also I wanna remind everyone that the only reason the friend with benefits -lovers- thing they had going on was “secret”, was to protect Santana. And that Brittany demonstrates in multiple occasions that she wouldn’t care if other people knew
And this is why I think that Glee deciding not to write a coming out scene for Brittany, was one of their best decisions, and for once very much in character.
I still think Britt should have been more involved in Santana’s coming out AS HER GIRLFRIEND but that’s an entirely different mess lol
