Random MHA Headcanon

Setsuna and Rapt have the same last name Tokage.

They both have lizard or lizard-adjacent Quirks.

It would stand to reason they are somehow related, BUT the sticking point in that theory is that Setsuna's last name is written with the kanji 取蔭 while Rapt's is written as 十日夏. But the pronunciations are similar and both names are homophonous with the Japanese word for lizard. (蜥蜴, pronounced tokage)

So with the different spellings and two completely different backgrounds, it shouldn't be probable that Setsuna and Rapt are related. He's a street thug turned vigilante. She got into an exclusive high school on recommendation, which from prior knowledge with Yaoyorozu and Shouto getting in on recommendation, that seems to imply families with money/influence.

Except I find the similar-sounding surname along with the lizard and lizard-esque Quirks too big a coincidence in a series that leaned so heavily into the idea that Quirks are hereditary traits. It’s also worth noting that Setsuna is from Saitama Prefecture and Rapt is presumably from Tokyo where Vigilantes takes place. Tokyo and Saitama Prefectures neighbor each other, commuting between the two is common, so the pair are close in terms of geographic location.

So my headcanon/theory is this:

We all know heteromorph prejudice and mistreatment is present in the series. So what if there was a family schism where Setsuna and Rapt had shared grandparents or great-grandparents, but when half of the babies in the family started coming out looking like freaks, they were ostracized until the human-looking members of the family eventually disowned them and changed the kanji spelling of the family name for good measure?

Basically, Rapt has the family name’s original kanji spelling while Setsuna has the modified version her family created as a means to distance themselves from the 'shameful relations.' Her branch of the family retained its wealthy and/or influential status while his was relegated to being cut off, impoverished, and vilified.

It was only an accident of birth that set them apart in two different branches of the same family. And no, this isn’t a post to bash Setsuna as anti-heteromorph. If it happened before she was born, then there’s no reason she would know something like this happened and if she does, a progressive fifteen year old isn’t going to have too much of a voice in a family of bigoted elders.

It could be worth exploring and I may touch on this in a fic.

Moyu: "ah, I've seen this chick. She's a high schooler famous for flashing her Butt on the internet"

Soga: "you think you're a Hero with this makeup? More like a vilain, I'd say"

Pop: "stop! My face is a trade secret!!"

Moyu: “how about we strip you down and broadcast That on the net?"

Pop:" Noo!"

Rapt: "Gya-HaHa, that's cold man"

Pop: "stop get offa me!!" Koichi hits Moyu's leg,

Moyu "whaddya think you're doing?" Picks him up and throws him, Soga Kicks him and slices his cheek with his quirk

Soga: "that does does it. You ain't getting away with just a beating. We're Gonna crush you and that store of yours!! then that little skank is gonna show off all her Goods to the world!! After we have our way with her!!

Koichi- "th-thats to much"

Soga: "THIS IS ALL HAPPENING CUZ YOU HAD TO GO AND PISS ME OFF!"

Pop- "stop! I'll scram for the police!"

Moyu- "sure, you do that" Rapt- "Oh no. The police. Scaaary~ why not Yell for a Hero instead? Try it say, 'help me, All Might'"

Moyu?- "come on give it a shot"

Knuckle duster comes in

Soga: "MAKING A CHUMP OUTTA ME, WHADDA YOU KNOW ABOUT JUSTICE, YOU OLD BASTARD?" Knuckle duster- "knock is off, Boy. My fist ain't gonna fly Any slower just cuz you've got a hostage"

Soga:"YOU THINK SHES A HOSTAGE?! MY SPIKES ARE ABOUT TO MAKE MINCEMEAT OF THIS CHICK'S FACE! MIGHT BE THE ONLY SATISFACTION I GET ALL NIGHT!!" Gets beat up

Anime . . . . . . . . . .

Soga: "well, would ya look at that, check out what she's wearin' under the coat!"

Rapt: "haha we cought a freak!"

Moyu: "I know this chick! She's famous 'cause she struts her stuff for her fans online!"

Soga: "what kinda hero hides their face under makeup? You're more like a vilain!"

Pop: "please, stop it! My face is a trade secret!" Koichi: "um pardon?"

Moyu: "then we'll take pics for the world to see!" Pop: "No!" Rapt: "haha dude, that's awful"

Soga: "now I'm in a mood, we're not just gonna beat you up, we're gonna take both you and your store and tear them to shreds!"

Soga: "then, we'll make this Exhibitionist wannabe show more then her face online!"

Koichi: "no why go that fare!"

Soga: "because you're a damn annoying little brat! THATS WHY!" 

Pop: "stop or I'm gonna call the police!"

Rapt: "shouldn't you be calling for a hero's aid instead? 'Please, rescue me, All Might!' Just try!" Moyu: "yeah, speak up! I can't hear you?"

Knuckle duster appears

Soga: "I've hear enough 'justice' out of you, old man! Shut it!"

Knuckle duster: "sarender wall you can, taking a hostage won't lessen the pain when my first meets your face"

Soga: "you think this chick's a hostage? Well, take a good look at her face! Cuz my spikes gonna tear her to pieces! At this point I'm not settling for less!"

Pop: "No! Please! I'm begging you!"

Soga gets beat up

Most of that wasn't necessary but I wrote it all out anyway. . . it's kinda different in the anime, things are phrased a little different, yeah its still clear what their gonna do to her But it's phrased in a way where it's almost like their just talking about the makeup at first and then They piss of Soga real bad and he gets outta control, (maby I’m just bad with context clues or something though and being completely blind to this scean)

unlike the Manga where their straight up saying to strip her down right off he bat, I mean yeah the intentions are the same I just thought the changing of the words to be an interesting detail. . . . .

someone I told this said that it’s not any different and it just has a different Escalation between manga and anime saying that, the manga sarted out at a 7 on a bed level and anime worked its way up to a 7 (don’t question my choice of numbers) so I dounno if it’s inherently Better with that info but eh. . . .

Maby it woulda been better to take it down another notch but still. . . I know this scean is bad eather way but did the anime make it a little . . . . better? I dounno,
